A HEALTHY SENSE OF SELF

We have explored the idea that Christians believe that God is love (1 John 4:8). Jesus
teaches that God's love is also present in our love for one another, and that we are
most like God when we love as God loves. According to
the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

" God Himself is an eternal exchange of love, Father,


Son, Holy Spirit and He has destined us to share in that
love" (221)

Jesus modeled ultimate love in His words, actions and


relationships. It is so important that we model that same love not only for others, but
also ourselves. Self-love, self-worth and self-esteem are all connected. With so many
pressures in social media, television programs and the radio – more and more young
people are told ‘you are not enough’, so they seek change. We now have great trends
in plastic surgery, liposuction, people are trying to change how they look. People have
become no longer happy with who they are, or what they look like. If a person does not
truly love who they are, how can they truly love others? There is a whole industry out
there that benefits (through profit) off the idea that you are not enough. People need to
be aware of this and do their best to avoid believing it! This is not a society reflective of
Gods love. This is not what God created us to believe about ourselves or others. So
how can we change this?

As Catholics we believe God made us uniquely


individual, with fantastic qualities and talents. We MUST
become content with who we are. Love oneself. We
may not be perfect in everything we do, we may make
mistakes, hurt people and get things wrong. But we are
strong individuals who can impact change and say sorry
for the things we did wrong, show forgiveness towards
others. It is important we recognise that we are important! We are loved. Only then can
we begin to truly love others and set standards for ourselves so we are not vulnerable
to unhealthy relationships or being used by others.

Q. What do people have to be aware of in society order to help maintain a healthy


sense of self?
FIVE STEPS TOWARDS A HEALTHY SENSE OF SELF:
BELIEVE IN Believing in yourself is the number one necessity to
YOURSELF maintain confidence. Trust yourself! When you begin to
question yourself, you bring doubt into your life. Support
yourself though all of your choices and decisions, trusting
that you have your best interests at heart and know
what is best for you

LIVE AND When you allow yourself to listen to others as they tell you
SPEAK YOUR who you are and what you should be doing you give your
TRUTH power away to them in that moment. You allow their voice
to become more powerful than yours. Staying connected
with what you believe, how you feel, your values, morals,
your point of view is very important. Be strong in your
beliefs and convictions!

SEE It is important to always see yourself in a positive light.


YOURSELF IN Be proud of who you are and the accomplishments you
have made. Do not compare yourself to others! Try not
A POSITIVE to think bad thoughts or feelings that do not benefit you,
LIGHT speaking positively to yourself about yourself always.
Compliment
yourself and give yourself credit for all that you are
and that you do daily. You are amazing!

BE You must be compassionate with yourself and forgive


yourself to overcome guilt. Guilt is a normal human
COMPASSIONAT
reaction but cut yourself a break. Be patient,
E WITH understanding, loving, nurturing, complimentary,
YOURSELF supportive, empathic! You need self-love too.
KEEP Just like you must forgive yourself, you must also forgive
MOVING others and let go of the past. Let go of anything that is
keeping you from being focused on the present. Move
FORWARD forward, knowing you are perfect the way you are and
there is no reason to stay stuck in the past. Allow
yourself to see how far you have come and set goals
to what you want to do and be in the future.
