How to import Pads ASCII (.

asc) files into Altium


Firstly, check if you have installed the PADS importer. The method is shown as below:

1. Open the Altium designer software;


2. Click File menu, choose Import Wizard. Click Next. If you can see the PADS ASCII Design And Library text, you
have the importer. It is shown in below red box.

3. You can use it to import the Pads ASCII file into Altium. Just do as below:
a. Choose the importer, Click Next;
b. Click Add button in the bottom left corner. Then choose the .asc file from your location;
c. Choose Next….until you see the finish window. Click Finish, You can see the project file in your Altium
interface. Moreover, it generates a project folder in the same location as the .asc file;
d. Double click the PCB file from the projects panel in the left. Click Design menu, choose Make PCB Library;
The PCB footprint appears in your Altium interface;
e. Save it. You get the PCB footprint.

4. If you can’t see PADS ASCII Design And Library text, you need to install the PADS importer. Just do as below:
a. Click DXP pull-down menu, choose Extensions and Updates;
b. Click Configure in the top right corner from the window. See view 2 in next page;
c. View 3 window pop up. From Importers\Exporters option, check the PADS box (PCB import of PADS design
files);
d. Then you can install the importer to your Altium;
e. After that, follow step 2& step 3 to import the .asc file into Altium and get the PCB footprint.
