Topic Proposal for Review Article

SFI 103 B2L

Topic 1: Current state of agroforestry in the Philippines as an alternative farming practice

The effects of agroforestry in the status of farming in the country is an interesting point to take a look at.
This will highlight the impact of this alternative farming practice as adapted by farmers, especially
smallholder farmers from the rural areas, as a solution to the problems concerning the agriculture sector
in the country. This will also take a look at the state of implementation that the implementing agency/s
had reached or achieved since the introduction of this practice/technology in the local setting. As stated
by Rinkesh (n.d.) in their article entitled “What is Agroforestry? Importance and Components of
Agroforestry”, they wrote that it produces benefits such as addressing food security concerns,
production of livelihood for locals, addressing environmental concerns, and for the general welfare of
the local communities. This will supposedly provide a context whether these benefits or goals have been
achieved or met since agroforestry was introduced as a viable farming practice that emphasizes
sustainability for maximum benefit of people.

Topic 2: Agroforestry as climate change adaptation measures

The rate at which we experience natural calamities and disasters is rapidly growing and one thing to look
at when assessing what causes these destructions is the ways of life of people that are possibly
contributing to climate change, including the farming practices of farmers. According to Quandt et al.
(2023), this technology increases the adaptive capacity of the surrounding environment in response to
natural calamities and disasters and hence, it could entail a probable long-term solution that would
address climate change adaptation issues faced by the country. This would also be an alternative to
unsustainable farming practices such as kaingin or slash-and-burn that is destructive by nature and
contributes to global warming which further contributes to climate change. This is an integral point in
assessing the farming practice/technology’s effectiveness for countries like the Philippines as a means to
counter the natural calamities that produce devastating results in the agriculture sector every year.
