General Description:
Civil and Environmental Engineering is the field of engineering that includes the planning, designing,
construction and maintenance of structures and altering geography to suit human needs. Environmental
Engineering often is in the Department of Civil Engineering.
Listed below are the most common specializations and degrees within this area of study. Please note that the
manner in which US institutions classify or name an area of study might differ from your home country.
Common
Specializations
Transportation Transport engineering aims to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people
and goods.
Structures Structural engineering is the field of civil engineering particularly concerned with
the design of load-bearing structures. In practice, it is largely the implementation
of mechanics to the design of structures, such as buildings, bridges, walls
(including retaining walls), dams, tunnels, etc.
Construction Construction Management is the overall management of the processes required
Management to bring the site operations of a project to a satisfactory conclusion, typically
carried out either by a private consultant or an employee of the project client.
Geotechnics Geotechnical engineers investigate the soil and rock below the ground to
determine its properties, and then design foundations for man-made structures
built on the ground, such as buildings or bridges.
Hydrology/Water Areas of emphasis in this specialization include air pollution control, coastal
Resources systems, environmental systems analysis, groundwater hydrology contamination,
risk assessment, solid waste management, surface water quality, urban
stormwater management, and water and wastewater treatment, water resource
management.
Environmental Researchers in environmental engineering focus on areas such as: water quality
Engineering and treatment; wastewater reclamation and reuse; hazardous and solid waste
engineering; ground water modeling and treatment; air quality monitoring,
pollution control and modeling; environmental sciences; and industrial ecology.
Common Degrees
MEng The MEng is a professional degree. This degree can usually be completed in 1
year and does not require a thesis.
MS There are usually 2 options for the Master of Science degree. Thesis and non
thesis. The non thesis option usually requires more credits to complete the
degree.
PhD Highest degree. Typically a 5 year+ program beginning with coursework followed
by a dissertation composed of original research.
Doctor of This degree prepares individuals for professional engineering careers in business,
Engineering industry and the public sector. It is not intended as a research degree or as
preparation for a faculty position at a research university.
