FROM
THE DEAN
PROFESSOR
PRADEEP
ABEYGUNAWARDHANA
DEAN-FACULTY OF COMPUTING
It is both a privilege and an honor to address you as the Dean of the Faculty of Computing at the Sri Lanka Institute of
Information Technology (SLIIT). With a student population of over 13,000, we are proud to be the largest computing faculty
in the country, and possibly one of the largest in the world. As we stand at the forefront of the technology revolution, I am
filled with immense pride and anticipation for the challenging yet exciting future that lies ahead.
Our faculty of computing serves as a beacon of innovation, where cutting-edge research converges with hands-on
learning to shape the future of technology. Committed to nurturing inquisitive minds, cultivating creativity, and empower-
ing our students to become leaders in their fields, we offer a range of four-year honors degrees in Information Technology,
specializing in areas such as Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems Engineering, Computer Systems
and Network Engineering, Interactive Media, and Cyber Security. Additionally, we offer degrees in Computer Science and
Computer Systems Engineering. Our curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and practical
experience needed to succeed in the fast-paced world of computing. Through internal and external quality assurance
processes overseen by our Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, we ensure that our programs meet the highest standards.
Our Information Technology degrees are accredited by the Institute of Engineering Technology, United Kingdom (IET), and
the Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL). In addition to academic excellence, we also prioritize the holistic development
of our students. Our vibrant student experience culture includes a wide range of student-centered activities, from enter-
tainment and skill development to professional activities such as annual music events, sports events, seminar series,
workshops, and specialization-based communities. Our faculty and students actively engage in the global arena, partici-
pating in international competitions such as the Microsoft Imagine Cup, and collaborating with top-ranked universities on
research projects. Our flagship events, the International Conference on Advances in Computing (ICAC) and CODEFEST, a
national software competition, highlight our commitment to innovation and excellence. We understand the importance of
self-learning, which is why we provide resources such as digital databases like IEEE, online learning resources like O'Reilly,
and courses through the SLIIT Centre for Open and Distance Education (CODE). With a team of 160+ academic staff includ-
ing 9 professors and 30 PhD holders, we are proud of the expertise and dedication of our in-house staff.
Ensuring the employability and skill development of our students is paramount for us. Our Industry Engagement Unit (IEU)
works closely with over 1,000 companies in Sri Lanka and overseas to provide our students with real-world experience and
opportunities. Additionally, our Associate Dean for Research is dedicated to enhancing the research quality and innovative
product development of our faculty. As we navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, I urge each of you to
seize every moment as an opportunity for growth and discovery. Let us push the boundaries of what is possible, challenge
conventional wisdom, and strive for excellence in all that we do. To our students, I encourage you to show dedication and
commitment to achieve your academic and professional goals as you embark on the next chapter of your journey.
To our esteemed faculty and staff, thank you for your unwavering dedication and tireless commitment to our shared
mission. Your passion for teaching, research, and service inspires us all and drives us forward in pursuit of excellence.
Together, let us embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead with courage, resilience, and optimism. As we
chart a course towards a brighter future, let us do so with humility, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge.

SUCCESS STORIES
SUCCESS STORIES
BSc (Hons) in Architecture, offered by Liverpool John Moores University and conducted by SLIIT is a
well-organized and structured course with up to date course material including industrial norms and
theories exposing the students to the whole new world of architecture. Throughout the course,
lecturers who have been academically and professionally well experienced are delivering the best for
their students. Deliverables are consisted of both theoretical and practical knowledge, in a way in which
students shall be exposed to real-world scenarios, thereby developing them to be renowned
professionals in the future. As the first batch, we were able to set a benchmark for students in the years
to come and also to work closely with the staff, headed by the Head of the School of Architecture, to
make their vision come to fruition.
The fundamentals I learned at SLIIT gave me confidence to not only face, but “ace” my interview at Fidessa,
the world’s #1 Equities Trading Platform providers. I subsequently worked in Technology teams at three
investment banks in London; Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays Capital, and JP Morgan. Holding a First-Class
degree at the top of my batch became less relevant with time, as subject knowledge became obsolete. I
believe my commitment to a lifetime of learning beyond formal education has helped me adapt to change
and make progress in my career. After a ten year career in IT roles, I joined the Equities Trading Desk at JP
Morgan in 2017. In today’s rapid electronic Stock Markets and Algorithmic Trading world, complementary
skills and experience in technology and finance are highly valued by the industry. It is an exciting job that
requires mental agility and creativity. I work with a vast amount of data and help develop Artificial
Intelligence based trading strategies, as well as collaborate with our technology teams so they provide true
solutions to our needs. I balance my hectic work life by playing cricket for the Wimbledon Cricket Club in the
Surrey League, and travelling and exploring the world with my wife Gayani.

I am an entrepreneur, innovator and avid programmer. The foundation that SLIIT created for
me, is an invaluable component, as dedicated members of staff particularly the lecturers,
provided a solid sounding board to help hone my talent. Every course offered at SLIIT is
incredibly competitive not just on a local but also global scale, with degrees affiliated with
world-renowned universities thus giving students opportunities to gain internationally
recognised qualifications right here in Sri Lanka. As it is also cost-effective, SLIIT fits into the
mould effortlessly, allowing a wider demographic access to high-quality education. It is my
vision to become Sri Lanka’s premier end-to-end digital solutions provider in Mobile and
Enterprise Solutions, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Immersive Technologies,
and Game Design and Development, making Sri Lanka a digital hub whilst stopping ‘brain
drain’ in the country as we are losing the cream of our talent.
SLIIT was where I laid my foundation for my success. If the support given by SLIIT was not
there, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this fast. The foundation that SLIIT created for
me, is an invaluable component, also the dedicated members of staff particularly the
lecturers, provided a solid sounding board to help hone my talent. It is with immense
pleasure I tell that the institution is deeply investing in their students’ futures. Every course
offered at SLIIT is incredibly competitive not just on a local but also global scale, with
degrees affiliated with world-renowned universities thus giving students opportunities to
gain internationally recognised qualifications right here in Sri Lanka.
There are many people who have been a strength to me during my journey: My own
immediate family, Bathiya and Santhush, Saliya Weerasekara, and all the employees of
