ELECTRONIC AUDIO PROCESSING TECHNIQUES I (MUS 237.2)
COURSE OUTLINE
Pre-requisite: MUS 101.1
This course covers the basics of electronic audio technology. It introduces students to analogue and digital electronic circuits and techniques, and their applications in audio technology. Topics to be discussed include electricity and electrical quantities, electronic components and their characteristics, electrical circuits, microphone techniques and sound balancing, audio filters, electronic noise and distortion, as well as audio storage and transmission media/formats. Students, in teams, undertake guided audio processing projects.
1. Fundamentals of Digital and Analogue Electronic Techniques.
a) Electrical Quantities (Electric charge, current and voltage) b) Discrete Electronic Components and their properties (resistors and resistance; capacitors and capacitance; inductors and inductance; reactance, conductance and impedance; electrical energy and power). c) Ohm’s and Kirchhoff’s laws and their applications. d) Review of binary and hexadecimal arithmetic. e) Analogue-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analogue Conversion f) Audio signal filters 2. Introduction to Microphone and Loudspeaker Techniques for Performers. a) Review of types and applications of microphones. b) Monaural and stereophonic microphone techniques. c) Overview of electronic sound balancing d) Review of loudspeaker types and applications. e) Introduction to Sound fields. 3. Electronic Noise and Audio Signal Distortion. a) Review of electronic noise and signal-to-noise ratio. b) Dynamic range and audio signal clipping. c) Electromagnetic interference and cross-talk. d) Harmonic distortion in acoustic transducers. 4. Audio Processing Practicum
