FILMS
The first moving pictures were made in France, Britain and the USA in the 1890s. These films lasted
only a few seconds and not many people saw them. They were about exciting adventures and love
stories. They were in black and white and they didn´t have any sound. They were called “silent
movies”.
In 1902, Georges Méliés made “A Trip to the Moon” in France. He used the camera to play tricks
and made things disappear. This four-minute long film was a big success.
In the 1920s film directors started to make “talking films”. The first were cowboy films. People liked
them very much and the cinema became more and more popular.
At present, Hollywood in southern California is the film capital of the world. You can visit the most
important film studios of the USA there. What makes California the best place to film is the sunny
weather all year round and the variety of landscapes. There are mountains, beaches, deserts...
In Hollywood many different kinds of films are made today. When directors make animated and
science fiction films they use special effects. These days they can make films more exciting and
sometimes more frightening with computers and special equipment
