Transformations
The main types of transformations that we will be dealing with in this course are stretches,
compression, reflections and translation. Transformations must be performed in a particular order.
Stretches, compressions and reflections must be performed before translations.
𝒚 = ±𝒂𝒇(±𝒌(𝒙 − 𝒅)) + 𝒄
Once again, stretches, compressions and reflections must be applied before translations
𝒙
(x,y) → ( + 𝒅, 𝒂𝒚 + 𝒄)
𝒌
New Terminology
a) y = f(x + 1)
b) y = 3f(x) + 2
c) y = -2f(3(x – 1)) + 1
Ex. # 2 Describe the order in which you would apply the transformations defined by 𝒚 =
– 𝟐𝒇(𝟑(𝒙 – 𝟏)) – 𝟒 to 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥. Then state the impact of the transformation on the domain, range,
intervals of increase/decrease, and end behaviours of the transformed function.
