Exporting Maps in ArcMap
This skill is essential for sharing your work with
others, creating professional presentations, and
ensuring that your hard work is accessible in
various formats.

Exporting Maps as PDF: Let’s start with the

most common format for sharing maps: PDF. To
export your map as a PDF in ArcMap, follow
these simple steps:

1. Navigate to the File Tab: Open your

project in ArcMap and look for the File
menu located in the upper left corner
of the interface.

2. Select Export Map: From the

dropdown menu, find and click on
“Export Map.” This will open a new
dialog box where you can choose your
export settings.

3. Choose PDF Format: In the ‘Save as

type’ dropdown, select PDF. This
format is widely used and ensures that
your map retains its quality and layout when viewed on different devices.

4. Adjust Settings: Before you save, take a moment to adjust the settings. You can set parameters
such as page size, resolution, and whether or not to include layers. This is an important step to
ensure that your map meets your needs.

5. Save the File: Choose a location on your computer to save the file, give it a meaningful name, and
then click “Save.” Your map will be exported as a PDF file, which can be easily shared via email or
printed for presentations.

Saving as MXD or GIS Formats

In addition to exporting as a PDF, you might want to save your map in formats that allow for further editing
and analysis, such as MXD (ArcMap Document) or GIS file types. Here’s how to do that:

1. Navigate to the File Tab Again: Just like before, go to the File menu. Select Save As: This will open
a dialog box where you can specify the name and location for your file. Choose the Format: In the
‘Save as type’ dropdown, you can select options such as. mxd (Map Document) or other GIS
formats depending on your needs. Browse for Location: Select a folder or directory where you
want to save your file. It’s a good practice to keep your project files organized for easy access later.
Save the File: After naming your file and selecting the location, click “Save.”
