New Criticism
I. A. Richards is considered the Father of New Criticism. His book” Practical Criticism” (1929) gives
empasis on -
"close reading of the text”
I.A. Richards was supported by his student William Empam.
T.S. Elist is also a supporter of New Criticism. In his essay “The Frontiers of Criticism” (1956),
Eliat gives us----“the boundaries of literary criticism”
Literary criticism should not become а віоgraphy or a work of psychology.
New Criticism was a reaction against biographical and historical criticism which focused text
material. While discussing the Lucy Poems, some crititics start discussing Wordsworth's love affair.
New Criticism does not like this.
"The poem should be
discussed, not the poet.”
This is what New Criticism says. New Criticiem wants discussion of the -1/ language,2/imagery 3)
emotion (4) intellectual tension, etc.
New Criticism discusses the poetic and literary devices used by the writer. "Poetic and literary
devices" mean, the use of -
(1) metaphor (she is a rose.He is a lion)
(2) irony व्यंग
(3) paradox. (A child is the father of man.)
The great American poet Robert Frost says:
"In poetry we say one thing and mean another thing”
Poets like “ to talk in parables and and in hints and in indirections,"
Poets are shy and do not have the guts to speak the naked truth. After a close reading of the
text, a critic can come close to the actual meaning.
To conclude, New Critièrem has many qualities, but we must not follow it blindly. We can enjoy
poetry and literature better if we have some knowledge of writer's life and some idea of the society
in which the work was written.
