The study titled 'Factors Influencing Sleep Deprivation and Health Conditions Among Grade 12 STEM students' investigates the impact of sleep deprivation on academic performance and mental health among students. It identifies academic pressure, poor lifestyle choices, and environmental factors as significant contributors to sleep deprivation, which in turn affects cognitive function and academic outcomes. The study concludes that sufficient sleep is crucial for student achievement and recommends promoting healthy sleep habits and time management among students.

Eugene: According to Owens (2014), Many students understand what it’s like being sleep

deprived, negatively impacting academic performance and mental health. These students face
pressure to excel in their studies sacrificing their own health just to meet the best standards often
working and studying hard into the night. That’s why we came up with the study entitled:
ALL: “Factors Influencing Sleep Deprivation and Health Conditions Among Grade 12 STEM
students”

Eugene: A pleasant morning to everyone , especially to our panelists , I am Eugene Kharl

Leuterio
Dalton: Dalton James Opis
Benj: Manolito Benj Borces
CJ: And I am Carl John Liwanagan

Eugene: Many factors, such as extracurricular activities and maintaining relationships within
each other, also contribute to the sleep deprivation of students.. Students often find themselves
exhausted and balancing their time with a risk in their health leading to alarming consequences.
Sleep deprivation does not only affect memory and focus, but also increases the risk of having
mental disorder, such as anxiety and depression.

Dalton: The goal of the study is to know the factors affecting the mental and physical health of
STEM students, as well as differences in health outcomes based on the frequency and duration of
sleep deprivation, and correlation between sleep duration and academic performance of grade 12
STEM students.

Benj: The whole study is important because understanding the effects of sleep deprivation and
may serve as an awareness in order to get the best education possible, as well as improving sleep
schedule while maintaining the academic performance. It also serves as a guide in taking care of
your own health away from health complications.

CJ: This study focuses on academic workload as STEM students tackle advance subjects
focusing in academics away from distractions and time management having significant effects to
sleep schedules. This study take place in Marindque National High School at Malusak Boac,
Marinduque. The whole study does not cover other problems that are not related and only tackle
what the study is all about.
Dalton:To get the results needed, the procedures are conducted under the descriptive design and
utilizes a close- ended survey questionnaire. To determine the number of respondents needed,
This study utilized slovin’s formula to get the sample size for the study from 77 students down to
62 students with a 95% confidence level. The data are gathered from 62 respondents of Grade 12
STEM students and compare individuals getting less than the recommend hours of sleep per
night to those getting the recommended hours required per night. Descriptive statistics and
tabulation are also used to determine the correlation of sleep deprivation to the academic
performance of the students.
SOP 1
Benj: In terms of results, Academics was the leading activity contributing to sleep deprivation,
followed by Gaming/Entertainment as well as Part time jobs and lastly, Physical Activities were
less of a contributor showing that academics was the activity that affect the students most among
other activities.
Poor lifestyle was the most significant factor physical contributing to sleep deprivation, with
respondents showing it as a major issue followed closely by the Lack of Physical Exercise as a
contributing factor. Medical Conditions as well as lack of physical exercise shows that having a
bad lifestyle leads to bad consequences.
Academic pressure was the most mentioned mental factor by respondents, contributing the most
of sleep deprivation cases among the students. Emotional distress contribution followed closely,
Stress/Anxiety and Overthinking was the least identified factor leading to students pushing
themselves to their own limit.
SOP 2
Dalton: The mean score of 2.98 indicates that external factors like neighbors, noise, temperature,
or lighting influence their sleep.
With a mean score of 2.51, most respondents rarely consume caffeinated drinks before bedtime
impling how caffeine and energy drinks can disrupt sleep.
The mean score of 3.09 shows that respondents sometimes feel the negative effects of sleep
deprivation affects their mental and physical health, including symptoms like stress, anxiety,
depression, or feeling tiredness.
The mean score of 3.08 reflects that respondents sometimes feel less motivated studying or do
what they normally do and also feels less energized when they sleep less than 6 hours, and
emphasize the importance of sufficient rest for maintaining energy levels.
CJ: A mean score of 2.91 reveals that respondents Sometimes find that lack of sleep hinders their
ability of decision-making indicating insufficient rest can impair our cognitive function.
The mean score of 3.24 shows that the respondents feel that sleep affects their academic
performance sometimes. This indicates that there is a strong relationship between getting
sufficient sleep and academic outcomes.
The mean score of 2.82 indicates that respondents sometimes notice that there's a decline in their
academic performance after sleeping less than 6 hours, highlighting the cognitive impacts of
sleep deprivation.
The mean score of 3.12 suggests that respondents Sometimes struggle to understand class
material when they do not get enough sleep, further emphasizing the importance of sleep for
learning.
SOP 3
Eugene: The study also shows that students who slept for 8 hours or more exhibited the higher
mean academic performance than those who only got 4 hours of sleep. As illustrated in table 5
and 6, learners with extended sleep times attained high performance than those with reduced
sleep times suggesting that increased sleep correlates with improved academic results which
shows significance of sufficient sleep for maximizing student achievement and imply that
emphasizing sleep may be a crucial tactic for academic accomplishment.
CJ: This concludes that academics, poor lifestyle and academic pressure was the factors that
affect the students most among other factors. Environment, drinks with caffeine, hindering skills
and other factors also contribute to sleep deprivation, as well as showing that students with more
hours of sleep perform better at school.

Eugene: We recommend managing time properly and supporting the students, as well as
promoting healthy mind and lifestyle. We also encourage campaigns on proper sleep hygiene,
adjusting to the environment and getting a balanced sleep for optimal performance.

That’s all and thank you.
