Software working environment

SolidWorks Windows
SolidWorks windows have two panels. One panel provides non-graphic data. The other panel provides a graphic
representation of the part, assembly, or drawing. The leftmost panel of the window contains the FeatureManager®
design tree, PropertyManager, ConfigurationManager, and Toolbox.
1 Click each of the tabs at the bottom of the left panel and see how the contents of the window changes.
The rightmost panel is the Graphics Area, where you create and manipulate the part, assembly, or drawing.
2 Look at the Graphics Area. See how the dumbell is represented. It appears shaded, in color, in an
isometric view, and with shadows. These are some of the ways in which the model can be represented very realistically.

Toolbars
Toolbar buttons are shortcuts for frequently used commands. You can set toolbar placement and visibility based on the
document type (part, assembly, or drawing). SolidWorks remembers which toolbars to display and where to display
them for each document type.

1 Click View, Toolbars.

A list of all toolbars displays. The toolbars with a check mark beside them are visible; the toolbars
without a check mark are hidden.
2 Click the toolbar name to turn its display on or off. If it is not already on, click View to turn the View toolbar.
3 Turn several toolbars on and off to see the commands.
Mouse Buttons
Mouse buttons operate in the following ways:
Left – Selects menu items, entities in the graphics area, and objects in the FeatureManager design tree.
Right – Displays the context-sensitive shortcut menus.

Getting Started

Options button from the Menu Bar toolbar →Document Properties dialog box . This can be used for modifying
various properties related to a document (Units , dimensions , Grid settings)

Selection →To select multiple entities, press and hold the SHIFT key and select the entities. After selecting some
entities, if you need to select more entities using the windows or cross selection, press and
hold the SHIFT key.

If you need to remove a particular entity from a group of selected entities, press the CTRL
key and select the entity. You can also invert the current selection using the CTRL key.

Drawing : Various tools are used , most simple of them being line, curve and rectangle

Pan tool is used to drag the view in the current display. You can also press the CTRL key and the middle mouse button
and then drag the cursor to move the entities

DIMENSIONING TECHNIQUES

The Fully Define Sketch tool is used to apply the relations and dimensions to the sketch automatically. To fully define
a sketch, draw the sketch using the standard sketching tools. Choose Fully Define Sketch from the
Dimensions/Relations toolbar

The Measure tool is used to measure the perimeter, angle, radius, and the distance between the lines, points, surfaces,
and planes in sketches, 3D models, assemblies, or drawings. To measure an entity, invoke the Measure toolbar by
choosing the Measure button from the Evaluate CommandManager

The Section Properties tool enables you to determine the section properties of the sketch in the sketching environment
or of the selected planar face in the Part mode and the Assembly mode. Remember that the section properties of only
the closed sketches with non intersecting closed loops can be determined. The section properties include the area,
centroid relative to the sketch origin, centroid relative to the part origin, moment of inertia, polar moment of inertia,
angle between the principle axes and sketch axes, and the principle moment of inertia.

Creating Features

After drawing the sketch, choose the Features tab from the CommandManager to display the Features
CommandManager. Choose the Extruded Boss/Base button from the Features CommandManager; the sketching
environment will be closed and the part modeling environment will be invoked.

VIEW ORIENTATION

You can manually change the view orientation using some predefined standard views or user-defined views. To invoke
these standard views, choose the View Orientation button from the Heads-up View toolbar
