2 Alcatel-Lucent 8 and 9 Series Sets

2.1 Overview
The success of today's business practices depends on reducing the stress the
business person experiences as a result of the fast pace of modern
communications. New communications tools have the potential to save time
and diminish tasks. However, the benefits of communication technology are
only realized if the barriers to using the technology are lowered significantly.

Alcatel-Lucent offers now a full range of desktop phones answering new end-
users communication needs:
 Alternative design
 Enhanced audio quality
 Open to external applications
The “Alcatel-Lucent 8 Series IP Touch” are IP phones which can be connected
directly on the IP network and the “Alcatel-Lucent 9 Series” are TDM phones
connected on the traditional telephony network, both series can be linked to
the IP world through the OmniPCX Communication Server. The equivalent
phones in each line (Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch 4018 and Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch
4019 Phones for example) have the same characteristics and ergonomics but
the application openness is available today only on the “Alcatel-Lucent 8-
series” phones (except Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch 4008 /Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch
4018 Phones).

2.2.3 Audio

Audio control features (speaker, hands free audio

control, mute, etc.) are separated from the system
function keys to allow easy and clear audio control for
the user.

Hands Free Mode

The Hands free mode is “Full duplex” with echo cancellation and attenuation
and offers a comfort of use and an excellent audio quality level. The
translucent Hands Free key has an embedded green LED To indicate that the
feature is activated. This key allows also smooth transfer from handset to
headset or hands free mode.
Volume
Two keys are available to adjust the volume level of the ringing, hands free
speaker or handset speaker. The last volume level used is held in memory as
the default volume level.

Desktop Telephones
2.2.5 Ergonomics

With the depth and sophistication of enterprise communication services

available today, ergonomics play a key role in how information is presented to
the user, and how that information leads to the appropriate action.

One of the main objectives of the Alcatel-Lucent 8 and 9 series phones is to

significantly improve the global ergonomics and presentation of services. New
user needs and communication habits are considered to simplify the set use.
IP Touch phones are also an open platform for new services, and are able to
integrate external applications and interact with other business tools (PC, PDA,
cellular phone, etc.).

A large graphical display associated

with navigation keys is very helpful to
meet these goals. The home page is
displayed when the phone is in idle
state, or when in an application the
user presses on the EXIT/HOME key to
go back to the home page in order to
initiate a new application or access
information. The home page consists
of 3 default tabs. However, an external
XML application could also ad a new
tab on the home page.

The “MENU” tab accesses all functions and applications accessible to the
user.

8AL90601USAC/05 Ed 1 – July 2007 15/48 Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise CS

Desktop Telephones
The Personal tab (“PERSO”) has up to 40 programmable keys (5 pages). It
can also be used to supervise traffic using line keys.

1. Communication icons in the PERSO home page

The “INFO” tab gives information about phone status: new mail, forwarding
status, who am I (i.e., station ID), lock, silent mode, etc.

During a call, the user can return to the home page or any application by using
the Exit key.

2. A new call alert during a conversation

Desktop Telephones
3. WebCam: an XML application example

2.2.6 Customization

It is possible to customize the phones to meet individual needs and increase

productivity. This function enables either a uniform standard layout of
programmable keys to reduce administration costs, or customized user
programming to adapt to individual requirements.
 Unicode Transformation Format 8 (UTF8) characters are supported. This
allows sets to display:Names up to 30 characters long in full
 Cyrillic and Greek characters
 Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters (except Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch
4008 Phone, IP Touch 4018 Phone, and 4019 Digital Phone)

This includes names for:

 The caller when the set is ringing
 Trunk groups
 Speed dialing numbers
 Entities
 Programmed key labels on the PERSO page
 Directory key names (Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch 4008 Phone, IP Touch
4018 Phone, 4019 Digital Phone)
 Names displayed on the INFO page
 Associated number modification in the “settings” menu

8AL90601USAC/05 Ed 1 – July 2007 17/48 Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise CS

Desktop Telephones
It should be noted that individual sets can be customized for personal use to
display in a chosen language. This does not affect the display on a called
phone. For example, if a caller from China (Mandarin) telephones to Western
Europe (Latin), the callers name will be displayed in Latin characters.

An Input Method Editor (IME) is available on sets (except Alcatel-Lucent IP

Touch 4008 Phone, IP Touch 4018 Phone, and 4019 Digital Phone) for the input
of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters for dial by name and
programmed key labels on the PERSO pages.

Note: The IME is available for Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch 4028 Phone, IP Touch
4038 Phone, and IP Touch 4068 Phone sets starting with
maintenance release 8.0.1.

The string translation tool, TSL, supports translation into languages using
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean character sets (this needs to be verified). TSL
allows you to translate strings displayed by Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise
Communication Server applications on sets, PCs, and printers. Using TSL, you
retrieve strings from software deliveries, translate, and update the delivery in
real time. Modified or translated strings can be sent to Alcatel-Lucent to be
updated in future deliveries.

2.2.6.1 Customization of ringing melodies

Business Partners can download ringing melodies for IP Touch phones. They
can do this by connecting to the Alcatel-Lucent Web Server and downloading
the installation file to the Com Server. From the Com Server, they can
download the preferred melody on to their IP Touch phones.
 Business Partners must subscribe to have access to the installation file
 100 different melodies are available
 Personalized melodies are available through the Professional Services
subscription

2.10 3 Port PoE Gigabit Adapter

The 3 Port PoE (Power over Ethernet) Gigabit Adapter (gigabit switch)
transmits electrical power and data to the Alcatel-Lucent 8 Series IP Phones
over standard twisted-pair cables in an Ethernet network.
It is an Ethernet switch that allows gigabit network access for a PC that is
associated with an IP phone without modifying the existing Ethernet
infrastructure. The aim is to provide a separate 1 GB connection for the PC.
This feature is not possible if the PC is connected through the IP phone.
The gigabit switch can draw power over the Ethernet (PoE), or locally using an
adapter. The gigabit switch provides:
 one 1000BASE-T upstream LAN port,
 one 10/100BASE-T downstream device port for phone,
 one 1000BASE-T downstream device port for PC,
 power for the phone that is connected to the phone port.
You can install the gigabit switch on a desktop in a horizontal position.
The network cables for the gigabit switch must meet the following basic
requirements:
 shielded twisted pair Category 5 enhanced (CAT5E),
 RJ-45 connector,
 4 pair,
 straight through pin out,
 shielded connectors.
Maximum cable lengths are as follows:

8AL90601USAC/05 Ed 1 – July 2007 41/48 Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise CS

Desktop Telephones
 gigabit switch LAN port to the IP network: 100 meters,
 gigabit switch phone port to the IP phone:
o 100 meters if the gigabit switch is powered locally,
o 3 meters if the gigabit switch is powered over Ethernet,
 gigabit switch PC port to PC: 100 meters

2.11 IP Touch Application Openness

2.11.1 IP Touch Application Phone

An application phone is a terminal, which in addition to delivering telephony

features, has the ability to access and display XML Business and
communication applications. This is done through a Presentation server that is
used as a gateway between the application phone and the applications
servers. These applications have a major advantage over their PC counterparts
in that they are immediate (no delays in booting or in loading). At the same
time, with that device, customers can keep pace with new communication
features from Alcatel-Lucent, such as OmniTouch Unified Communication.

The application openness is possible on Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch 8 series

terminals except on the Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch 4008 Phone and IP Touch
4018 Phone sets.

2.11.2 IP Touch Presentation Server

The Presentation Server acts as a gateway between the IP Touch phones and
the XML application servers.

8AL90601USAC/05 Ed 1 – July 2007 42/48 Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise CS

Desktop Telephones
For a third party application to access the IP touch phones and use them
display capabilities, the Presentation server is mandatory. The Presentation
server performs the role of presentation gateway and it offers the third party
application a set of XML based display services to:

1. Adapt and configure the delivery and layout of information on the IP

Touch Screen

2. Interact with the end user via the IP Touch keypad.

The set of XML Services embedded in the Presentation Server is called IP

Touch XML API and is a subset of the suite of XML Web services APIs which are
available on the Alcatel-Lucent solutions.

2.11.3 Which Services are Available on IP Touch Phones?

All services offered by communication servers (Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Office

or Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise Communication Server) are available on
the IP Touch phones and do not require a Presentation server: call back on
busy, dial by name, call forwarding, conference calls etc. (more than 500
features)!

However, to deliver any services brought by other application servers, a

Presentation server is mandatory.

The Presentation server brings openness to any customized applications

thanks to an IP Touch XML interface.

8AL90601USAC/05 Ed 1 – July 2007 43/48 Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise CS

Desktop Telephones
Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch Unified Communication is available on the Alcatel-
Lucent IP Touch 4068 Phone and IP Touch 4038 Phone. The presentation
server is needed to run this application.

Within the framework of the Alcatel-Lucent Application Partner Program

(AAPP), the XML forum makes it very easy for customers, partners and
software houses to design just any application they can think is needed for
their business on top of our XML interfaces.

In order to accompany application partners and software integrators in their

development of business applications and projects on top of these APIs,
Alcatel-Lucent has introduced the XML Developer Forum
(http://www.applicationspartner.alcatel-lucent.com/), which proposes a set of
services, means and tools.

Some very interesting applications have already been designed by partners to

address specific user needs in various verticals.

2.12 Commercial Demonstration Tools
Demonstration CDROM
This auto run CDROM presents a simulation of most of the features of the two
IP Touch phones on a PC screen. Interactive scenarios explain the operation of
the main functions, on Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Office or Alcatel-Lucent
OmniPCX Enterprise Communication Server. It can be used for demonstration
or training purposes.

This CD can also drive an actual phone connected on the Ethernet link of the
PC.

Two running modes:

 Manual mode (directly on the real phone or on the PC interface)
 Scenario mode
The simulation is available in five languages: English, German, French, Italian,
and Spanish.
Commercial Demo Kit
A case containing an Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch 4068 Phone to be connected to a
PC allows demonstration of the major features offered on the actual phone.

The demo kit comes with auto run demonstration software on a CDROM, an
Ethernet cable, and external power supply.

The simulation is available in five languages: English, German, French, Italian,

and Spanish.

3 IP Desktop Softphone
Release 8.0 provides the Alcatel-Lucent Professional Services IP Desktop
Softphone which is a Windows-based application installed on an agent’s PC
replacing the Alcatel-Lucent Advanced eReflexes phone. This fully-integrated
telephony solution provides PC users with a quicker and more user-friendly
access to telephone facilities to help businesses optimize their agents’
productivity.

Users initiate an outgoing call through the VoIP connection on their PC by

directly entering a telephone number in the number field or by using a dialing
feature such as Redial, Dial by Name, etc. Users can control the call by clicking
on the key layout on the screen.

Incoming calls ring through the computer loudspeakers and automatically

switch the voice connection to a USB headset. Incoming calls are also
controlled by clicking on the screen key layout.

The Alcatel-Lucent IP Desktop Softphone application can be used wherever

connectivity to the Customer IP network is available.

4 Power Patch Panel (PPP)

The power patch panel (PPP) supplies up to twenty-four IP phones using the
Ethernet link. The device is transparent to the IP protocol and is inserted
between the data switch and the IP phones.

The PPP is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3af (power over LAN) standard.

The PPP only supplies the link after detecting the presence of an IP phone.
