4. The main parts of a computer are the monitor, CPU, keyboard and mouse.
 Monitor: A monitor looks like a television. It helps us to see what we do on the computer.
 Keyboard: A keyboard is used to type numbers and words on the computer.
 Central Processing Unit (CPU): The CPU is the brain of the computer. It does all the
thinking when we work on the computer.
 Mouse: Mouse is used to select the items on the screen. We can scroll up and down on the
computer.
5. The other helping parts of the computer which are attached to the computer for different jobs are
speakers, microphone, compact disk (CD), pen drive and printer.
 Speakers: It helps us to listen the different sounds and songs.
 Microphone: It helps us to record our voice in the computer. It also helps us to talk to the
people through internet.
 Compact Disk (CD): We can store a lot of information in a CD.CDs are round, shiny disks
that run on the CD-ROM drive.
 Pen Drive: It can store a lot more information. There are USB ports given in the CPU. We
can insert the pen drive in these ports.
 Printer: A printer prints our work on the paper.

 Always use original software.
 Shut down the computer properly after you finish your work.
 Install a good antivirus program.
 Don’t download games or songs from unreliable sites on the internet.
 We should use a CD pen to write on a CD.
 Make sure your hands are clean before you work on it.
 Do not bring food and drink near the computer.
5. How and where a computer is used?
1. At home: Play games, listen to music, book rail, flight and film tickets, look for
information, watch films.
2. In schools: Students learn to work on the computer in the computer lab. A teacher uses it
to make test papers, worksheets, results.
3. At offices: A computer helps to store all the information in the office. It keeps record of
the people working here. It is used for typing letters, sending and getting emails.
4. In shops: A shopkeeper uses a computer to make bills and record of the things kept in the
shop.
5. In banks: A computer keeps record of all the bank accounts.
6. At Police station: A computer keeps record of all the criminals and helps in tracking them.
7. In hospitals: A computer keeps record of all the patients and doctors and helps in making
bills.
8. At railway stations and airports: A computer is used to reserve seats and make tickets.
It gives information about the arrival and departure of trains and aeroplanes.
9. In hotels: A computer helps in making bills and also keep the details of customers.
10. At petrol pumps: A computer helps in making bills. Petrol pumps too are fitted with
computers for proper filling of fuel.
