Read the following passage and and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the following questions.
In 1812 a young man called James Barry finished his studies in medicine at Edinburgh University.
After graduating he moved to London where he studied surgery at Guy’s Hospital. After that the popular
young doctor joined the army and over the next forty years had a brilliant career as an army medical
officer, working in many far-off countries and fighting successfully for improved conditions in hospitals. It
was a remarkable career - made even more remarkable by the discovery upon his death that he was in fact
a she, James Barry was a woman.
No one was more surprised at this discovery than her many friends and colleagues. It was true that
throughout her life people had remarked upon her small size, slight build and smooth pale face. One officer
had even objected to her appointment as a medical assistant because he could not believe that Barry was old
enough to have graduated in medicine. But no one had ever seriously suggested that Barry was anything
other than a man.
By all accounts Barry was a pleasant and good-humoured person with high cheekbones, reddish hair, a
long nose and large eyes. She was well-liked by her patients and had a reputation for great speed in surgery
- an important quality at a time when operations were performed without an aesthetic. She was also quick
tempered. When she was working in army hospitals and prisons overseas, the terrible conditions often
made her very angry. She fought hard against injustice and cruelty and her temper sometimes got her into
trouble with the authority. After a long career overseas, she returned to London where she died in 1865.
While the undertaker’s assistant was preparing her body for burial, she discovered that James Barry was a
woman.
So why did James Barry deceive people for so long? At that time a woman could not study medicine,
work as a doctor or join the army. Perhaps Barry had always wanted to do these things and pretending to be
a man was the only way to make it possible. Perhaps she was going to tell the truth one day but didn’t
because she was enjoying her life as a man too much. Whatever the reason, Barry's deception was
successful. By the time it was discovered that she had been the first woman in Britain to qualify as a
doctor, it was too late for the authorities to do anything about it.

It is estimated that by 2050 more than two-thirds of the world's population will live in cities, up
from about 54 percent today. While the many benefits of organized and efficient cities are well understood,
we need to recognize that this rapid, often unplanned urbanization brings risks of profound social
instability, risks to critical infrastructure, potential water crises, and the potential for devastating spread of
disease. These risks can only be further exacerbated as this unprecedented transition from rural to urban
areas continues.
How effectively these risks can be addressed will increasingly be determined by how well cities are
governed. The increased concentration of people, physical assets, infrastructure, and economic activities
mean that the risks materializing at the city level will have far greater potential to disrupt society than ever
before.
Urbanization is by no means bad by itself. It brings important benefits for economic, cultural and societal
development. Well managed cities are both efficient and effective, enabling economies of scale and
network effects while reducing the impact on the climate of transportation. As such, an urban model can
make economic activity more environmentally-friendly. Further, the proximity and diversity of people
can spark innovation and create employment as exchanging ideas breeds new ideas.
But these utopian concepts are threatened by some of the factors driving rapid urbanization. For
example, one of the main factors is rural-urban migration, driven by the prospect of greater employment
opportunities and the hope of a better life in cities. But rapidly increasing population density can create
severe problems, especially if planning efforts are not sufficient to cope with the influx of new inhabitants.
The result may, in extreme cases, be widespread poverty. Estimates suggest that 40% of the world's urban
expansion is taking place in slums, exacerbating socio-economic disparities and creating unsanitary
conditions that facilitate the spread of disease.
The Global Risks 2015 Report looks at four areas that face particularly daunting challenges in the
face of rapid and unplanned urbanization: infrastructure, health, climate change, and social instability. In
each of these areas we find new risks that can best be managed or, in some cases, transferred through the
mechanism of insurance.
Question 1. The word “that" in paragraph 4 refers to __________.
A. urban expansion B. socio-economic disparities
C. disease D. unsanitary conditions
Question 2. According to paragraph 3, what is one of the advantages of urbanization?
A. It minimizes risks for economic, cultural and societal development.
B. It makes water supply system both efficient and effective.
C. Weather and climate in the city will be much improved.
D. People may come up with new ideas for innovation.
Question 3. Which statement is TRUE, according to the passage?
A. Urbanization brings important benefits for development as well.
B. 54% of the world's population will live in cities by 2050.
C. Risks cannot be addressed effectively no matter how well cities are governed.
D. Rapidly increasing population density can help solve poverty.
Question 4. The word "addressed" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _________.
A. aimed at B. dealt with C. added to D. agreed on
Question 5. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Poverty may be a foregone conclusion of unplanned urbanization.
B. Diseases are caused by people migrating to cities.
C. Urbanization can solve the problem of environmental pollution in cities.
D. The increasing number of people in cities can create more employment.
Question 6. Which is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The Risks of Rapid Urbanization in Developing Countries
B. Infrastructure and Economic Activities in Cities

How do children learn about wildlife? And is what they learn the sort of thing they should be
learning? It is my belief that children should not just be acquiring knowledge of animals but also
developing attitudes and feelings towards them based on exposure to the real lives of animals in their
natural habitats. But is this happening?
Some research in this area indicates that it is not. Learning about animals in school is often
completely disconnected from the real lives of real animals, with the result that children often end up with
little or no understanding or lasting knowledge of them. They learn factual information about animals,
aimed at enabling them to identify them and have various abstract ideas about them, but that is the extent of
their learning. Children’s storybooks tend to personify animals as characters rather than teach about them.
For direct contact with wild and international animals, the only opportunity most children have is
visiting a zoo. The educational benefit of this for children is often given as the main reason for doing it but
research has shown that zoo visits seldom add to children’s knowledge of animals - the animals are simply
like exhibits in a museum that the children look at without engaging with them as living creatures. Children
who belong to wildlife or environmental organizations or who watch wildlife TV programmes, however,
show significantly higher knowledge than any other group of children studied in research. The studies
show that if children learn about animals in their natural habitats, particularly through wildlife-based
activities, they know more about them than they do as a result of visiting zoos or learning about them in the
classroom.
Research has also been done into the attitudes of children towards animals. It shows that in general
terms, children form strong attachments to individual animals, usually their pets, but do not have strong
feelings for animals in general. This attitude is the norm regardless of the amount or kind of learning about
animals they have at school. However, those children who watch television wildlife programs show an
interest in and affection for wildlife in its natural environment, and their regard for animals in general is
higher.

Volunteering offers many of the same social benefits, with the added bonus of helping others and
developing useful skills to put on your CV. Plus, students are in a unique position to help, suggests Tom
Fox. "They can take their enthusiasm and excitement for opportunities and share their passions, subject
knowledge and experience with people." The idea of giving up time for nothing might seem impractical
at first, especially once the pressures of study and coursework or exams begin to mount up. However,
Michelle Wright, CEO of charity support organization Cause4, suggests seeing volunteering as a two-
way street. "I think it is fine for undergraduates to approach volunteering as a symbiotic relationship
where doing good is just one part of the motivation for reaching personal and professional goals."
Katerina Rudiger, head of skills and policy campaigns at the Chartered Institute of Personnel
and Development (CIPD), says: "Volunteering can be a valuable way of gaining that experience, as
well as building confidence, broadening your horizons, becoming a better team player and developing
those all- important 'employability skills' such as communication and decision making." Amanda Haig,
graduate HR manager, agrees that volunteering can help your employment prospects. "Volunteering
can demonstrate positive personality traits and skill sets, such as proactivity, and teamwork," she says.
A positive side-effect of volunteering is improving your time at university by getting involved in
the local community. Leaving the student bubble can make your time as an undergraduate much more
varied. At Bath Spa University, more than 1,000 students volunteered over the past year, doing
everything from working on local environmental projects to helping in schools or assisting the elderly.
”Quite often there can be a divide between students and permanent residents," says students' union
president Amy Dawson, "but if students invest a little time now, they will be giving something back to
the local community and will reap the benefits in the future."
“You might also find that volunteering helps your studies if you choose the right program. At
Lancaster, volunteering is linked into academic modules in some cases", explains Fox. "This has
multiple wins. Students get to apply their learning in the classroom and share their interests with
children in local schools or community organizations, while schools gain skilled students with a passion
for a subject that enthuses their pupils."
Question 1: What is the most suitable title for this reading?

B. Students at universities should join as many activities in volunteer campaign at local schools as
possible.
