Ade 8.unit 8.section A.lesson 4-Condensed Lesson Plan-En

This lesson focuses on finding decimal approximations for square roots and plotting them on the number line. Students engage in activities that involve estimating and calculating lengths of line segments, as well as discussing square roots in pairs and as a class. The lesson includes a warm-up, two main activities, and a cool-down, emphasizing student collaboration and understanding of square roots.

GRADE 8 UNIT 8 LESSON 4

:Square Roots on the Number Line

Learning Targets
• I can find a decimal approximation for square roots.
• I can plot square roots on the number line.

Required Materials
• compasses • four-function calculators • tracing paper

Lesson Terms
rational number square root

WARM
, UP 5 MINUTES

:Diagonals
Launch
Arrange students in groups of 2. Tell students that they will look at an image, and their job is to think of at least one
thing they notice and at least one thing they wonder. Display the image for all to see. Ask students to signal when
they have noticed or wondered about something. Give students 1 minute of quiet think time, and then 1 minute to
discuss the things they notice with their partner, followed by a whole-class discussion.

What do you notice? What do you wonder?

Student Responses
Things students may notice:

• The center of the circle is at .

• There is a point labeled at on the circle.
• There are many tick lines between 0 and 1.

Things students may wonder:

• How to find the distance across the circle?

• Where exactly does the circle land on the and axis?

:Squaring Lines
Launch
For this activity, it is best if students do not have access to a calculator with a square root button. If student
calculators do have a square root button that students are familiar with, tell students that their explanations about
their answers to the second problem need to dig deeper than pressing a button. In later lessons, however, they will
be able to use it.

Problem 1

Estimate the length of the line segment to the nearest tenth of a unit (each grid square is 1 square unit).

Student Responses

Problem 2
Find the exact length of the segment.

:Square Root of 3
Launch
Give students access to four-function calculators. Display the diagram for all to see. Ask students what is the same
and what is different about this diagram and diagrams they have seen in earlier activities. Arrange students in groups
of 2. Give students 2–3 minutes of quiet work time followed by partner and whole-class discussions.

a. Use the square to explain why 2.5 is not a very good approximation for . Find a point on the number line that
is closer to . Draw a new square on the axes and use it to explain how you know the point you plotted is a
good approximation for .

b. Use the fact that is a solution to the equation to find a decimal approximation of whose square
is between 2.9 and 3.1.

a. Any number between 1.5 and 2 will give a better approximation, and the corresponding square will have an area
between 2.25 and 4. Because you can see the area of the square, you can know that the approximation is better.

b. 1.73

Are you ready for more?

A farmer has a grassy patch of land enclosed by a fence in the shape of a square with a side length of 4 meters. To
make it a suitable home for some animals, the farmer would like to carve out a smaller square to be filled with water,
as in the figure.

What should the side length of the smaller square be so that half
of the area is grass and half is water?

Student Responses
The area enclosed by the fence is 16 square meters, so we want the area of both the grassy region and the water
region to be 8 square meters. For the blue square in the figure to have an area of 8 square meters, the side length
needs to be meters, or about 2.8 meters.

Responding to Student Thinking

Points to Emphasize
If students struggle with square roots of irrational numbers in the Cool Down, plan to focus on square root values
when opportunities arise over the next several lessons. For example, in Lesson 5, Activity 1, ask students to discuss
the two whole numbers a number lies between and make sure to invite multiple students to share their thinking
about placement on a number line.
