Quadratic Function
Definition: A quadratic function is a polynomial equation with degree two where the highest
power of the variable is two.

1. A quadratic function can be written in the form of y=ax2+bx+c, where a, b, and c are constants.
This equation can be graphed to form a parabola, which is a U-shaped curve.

2. A quadratic function can also be written in the form of y=a(x-p)(x-q), where a, p, and q are
constants. This equation can also be graphed to form a parabola, but the vertex of the parabola
is determined by the values of p and q.

Parabola
Definition: A parabola is a U-shaped curve that is formed when a quadratic function is graphed.

1. The equation y=x2can be graphed to form a parabola. This parabola has a vertex at (0,0)
and an axis of symmetry at x=0.

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) can also be graphed to form a parabola. This parabola has a
vertex at (4,-4) and an axis of symmetry at x=2.

Context for:

Vertex
Definition: The vertex of a parabola is the point at which the parabola reaches its highest or
lowest point.

1. The equation y=x2 has a vertex at (0,0). This means that the parabola reaches its highest or
lowest point at the point (0,0).

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) has a vertex at (4,-4). This means that the parabola reaches its
highest or lowest point at the point (4,-4).

Discriminant
Definition: The discriminant is a value that is used to determine the number and type of solutions
of a quadratic equation.

1. The equation y=x2 has a discriminant of 0, which means that it has one solution, which is
x=0.

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) has a discriminant of 16, which means that it has two solutions,
which are x=4 and x=-2.

Axis of Symmetry
Definition: The axis of symmetry is the line that divides a parabola into two symmetrical halves.

1. The equation y=x2 has an axis of symmetry at x=0. This means that the left and right sides
of the parabola are symmetrical around the x-axis.

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) has an axis of symmetry at x=2. This means that the left and right
sides of the parabola are symmetrical around the line x=2.

Context for:

Maximum
Definition: A maximum is the highest point on a parabola.

1. The equation y=x2 has a maximum at (0,0). This means that the highest point on the parabola
is at the point (0,0).

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) has a maximum at (2,-2). This means that the highest point on
the parabola is at the point (2,-2).

Minimum
Definition: A minimum is the lowest point on a parabola.

1. The equation y=x2 has a minimum at (0,0). This means that the lowest point on the parabola
is at the point (0,0).

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) has a minimum at (-2,2). This means that the lowest point on the
parabola is at the point (-2,2).

Solution
Definition: A solution is a value of x that makes a quadratic equation true.

1. The equation y=x2 has one solution, which is x=0. This means that when x=0, the equation
is true.

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) has two solutions, which are x=4 and x=-2. This means that when
x=4 and x=-2, the equation is true.

3/4
Context for:

Root
Definition: A root is another word for a solution of a quadratic equation.

1. The equation y=x2 has one root, which is x=0. This means that when x=0, the equation is
true.

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) has two roots, which are x=4 and x=-2. This means that when
x=4 and x=-2, the equation is true.

Coe cient
Definition: Coefficients are the numbers in front of the variables in a quadratic equation.

1. The equation y=x2 has one coefficient, which is 1. This means that the equation can be written
as y=1x2.

2. The equation y=2(x-4)(x+2) has three coefficients, which are 2, -4, and 2. This means that
the equation can be written as y=2(x-(-4))(x+2).
