The Capstone Challenge for Grade 11 focuses on developing a sustainable water purification system for rural communities by recycling wastewater for irrigation. Students are tasked with creating a prototype that treats wastewater using natural materials and various techniques while ensuring environmental safety and efficiency. The project emphasizes hands-on experimentation, monitoring, and adherence to specific constraints regarding materials and safety protocols.

Capstone Challenge 2024-2025 Grade 11 Semester 2 Challenge

Title: Adaptation and Recycling of Wastewater Effluent for Sustainable Irrigation

Purposes Theme: system and feedback Egypt Grand Challenges
• Recycle garbage and waste for economic and environmental purposes.
• Address and reduce pollution fouling our air, water, and soil
• Improve uses of arid areas
• Manage and increase the sources of clean water

Capstone Big Idea: The capstone challenge for this semester focuses on creating a
sustainable and affordable water purification system for a rural community that
struggles with access to clean water. The approach involves effectively recycling
wastewater using natural and/or recycled materials, which will improve water
quality for irrigation. This initiative aims to alleviate the pressure on freshwater
resources while boosting agricultural productivity.
Essential Question: How can wastewater effluent be effectively adapted and
recycled for irrigation purposes while minimizing environmental and human
health risks?

1. The collected wastewater sample must be in enough quantity to irrigate the

salinity-resistant plant and to be recycled.

2. The salinity-resistant plant will be irrigated with wastewater that has a

salinity > threshold value of 500 ppm (with at least a salinity of 1000 ppm):

3. The prototype must include activating a suitable pump to circulate the

wastewater in a closed-cycle system.
4. The wastewater should be treated using natural and/or recycled materials
for at least two water quality parameters: one of them is salinity, and the
other is chosen by the capstone team determining its threshold value based
on scientific reference.

5. The wastewater should be treated using at least two different techniques

e.g.. adsorption (chemical or physical), coagulation using electric add/or
magnetic field, biological, etc.

6. The prototype must include a two-way gate to whether to irrigate or recycle

the wastewater for treatment again based on the threshold values reading
of both monitored water quality parameters.
7. Students should follow up on the efficiency of the treatment processes
every cycle for at least five complete treatment cycles for the same
wastewater sample. Besides, using the graphical fitting methods for the
results data to determine the number of equivalent cycles Life expectancy
of the treatment system.

8. The team should study the capacity of the prototypes (i.e., study the
volume of produced clean water with time) every 10 min for at least 1 hour.
Besides, a third effective measurable factor is chosen by the team.

9. Students should calculate the system energy consumption per litter of clean
water. Note that, the team should use a multimeter to measure the electric
current and voltage that must be available on the exhibition day.

10.If the team used sensors, they must be calibrated using standard methods
or instruments.

11.The team should provide a video for the growth stages of the salinity-
resistant plant and the prototype building and test steps
12.Functional prototypes must be testable, workable, and portable on the
exhibition day. Besides, the team should bring a soft copy of their portfolio.
Constraints:
1- It is not allowed to use any manufactured material in constructing your
prototype.
2- Don't use fertilizer in your experiment
3- The prototype must be testable at any time and place.
4- The cost of the prototype is not considered in design requirement.
5- Seeds should not be from grocery stores but from trusted scientific research
centres and institutes
6- You must follow ALL School Safety rules and documents in your Capstone
Portfolio. Failure to do so will result in a reduced grade.
7- No equipment or materials that belong to the laboratories can be removed
