Week 6 Module 7 Paper Evaluation Assignment (50 pts.)

Student Name: Steven Koufaliotis

1. Write at least 250 words (double spaced) evaluating the dataset, sample population and main objective/purpose of this
study. (15 pts.)

Within the article “The importance of social security benefits to the income of the aged population” by Dusho, Lams, and

Trenkamp, the authors of the article all take a look at the dataset that includes a wide range of older adult aged folks, all

of which rely on social security benefits for the most part in order to live and continue their lives. The article goes into a

long-term dataset, in which helping the ongoing current discussions about the future of gasoline and the renewable

energy. While making these claims, the authors go on to mention that only a percentage of the income that social

security brings in can provide benefits to this demographic and vise versa. While social security is a very important aspect

of income for older adults, the study goes on to illustrate the fact that this is subjective on the program continuing to run

as it is in present day.. and any proposed or enacted changes to the program can cause a big shift in the available funds

for those looking to retire and continue to maintain their desired lifestyle within retirement.

2. In at least 250 words (double spaced) evaluate the theory(ies) used in this study and whether the author(s) explained the
theory(ies) sufficiently. (15 pts.)

While the study discusses a multitude of different important history, there are several economic and sociological theories

they use within the framing of their analysis. One theory that is mentioned consistantly is the life cycle hypothesis, which

goes on to illustrate that individuals plan their savings patterns and consumption behavior within the early years of their

lives, anticipating the slight change that will come during retirement and thus compensating for that when planning to

retire. The concepts of social security are mentioned throughout the article, with government programs like such playing

a key role in reducing the poverty that is commonly seen in some other countries in regard to the older age group.

Overall I think that the article could have done a better job within discussing how personal feelings and various other

related thoughts/disorders also affect/change the landscape within an individuals life when nearing retirement.

3. Writing at least 250 words (double spaced), convey your opinion/critique of the overall study, methods, findings, and
application (avoiding writing in first person). Bring in your own research of at least one other scholarly source that
supports or counters your own critique. Provide a citation and reference for the outside source and cite and reference the
textbook when used. (15 pts.)

Overall, the study provides us with a closer look as to how important things like social security benefits are for those are

are currently retired or those anticipating to retire soon. The article uses solid research methods and presents clear

findings to the reader proving that they are within a similar demographic to those presented within the article, with the

authors utilizing a comprehensive dataset provided to them by the social security administration through the employment

of their current beneficiary survey. In addition, the study's findings reveal that a substantial portion of the aged

population heavily relies on social security benefits, which effectively reduces poverty levels among seniors. The authors

then go on to strengthen their argument by addressing the potential risks associated with proposed reforms to the

system (social security) which could disproportionately affect low-income and minority populations. This part of the article

felt very critical to me, as research done outside of the article showed that cuts to social security can lead to increased

poverty rates among the elderly, especially among the most vulnerable groups (Meyer & Sullivan, 2018)
