PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR CAREER SEMINAR

III. Rationale:
Reading enhancement is about making reading more effective and enjoyable.
It's not just about decoding words, but about understanding, engaging with,
and even speeding up the reading process. This involves developing skills like
active reading, building vocabulary, and improving focus, ultimately leading to
a richer and more rewarding reading experience.

Shamita Mahapatra (2016) discusses the challenges children face in reading,

which can arise from difficulties in word decoding or reading comprehension.
Word decoding issues often stem from a failure in phonological coding, while
comprehension difficulties may be linked to challenges in focusing on relevant
information, understanding relationships between ideas, strategic thinking,
vocabulary knowledge, inference-making, and reflective language skills. The
author explores the PASS model of intelligence, highlighting that word reading
relies on successive processing, particularly in early grades, whereas reading
comprehension primarily depends on simultaneous processing. Additionally,
planning and attention are essential across all reading levels. The PASS
Reading Enhancement Program aims to address these areas to improve
reading skills in children.Mahapatra, S. (2016). Reading disabilities and PASS
reading enhancement programme. Journal of Education and Practice, 7(5),
145-149.
Reading enhancement programs are really important because they help
students learn to love reading and become better readers. They don't just
teach students how to sound out words, but help them understand what they
read and enjoy it more.

These programs are important because reading is a really important skill that
helps students do well in school, learn new things, and understand the world
around them. By helping students become better readers, these programs give
them the tools they need to learn and grow.

For students who have trouble reading, these programs can make a big
difference. They give them extra help and teach them ways to overcome their
challenges. And for all students, these programs can help them read faster,
understand more, and enjoy reading even more.

IV. Specific Objectives:

•increase reading comprehension

•development vocabulary

•develop critical thingking skills

•build confidence

V. Brief Description of the Project

The Reading Enhancement Project aims to improve the reading skills of all
Grade 11 and 12 students at Vicente Madrigal Integrated School. The project
will provide daily reading materials, such as articles, short stories, and essays,
that match students' interests and reading levels. These materials will be
available through digital platforms and printed copies, with trained students
from Grades 11 and 12 leading brief discussions or reflections during
designated reading sessions. Teachers will oversee the process during the
initial phase to ensure smooth implementation.
The project will focus on enhancing reading comprehension, vocabulary, and
critical thinking skills. Later phases of the project will revisit materials
introduced earlier to strengthen students' retention and understanding.
Weekly reading tasks will also be incorporated into students' English classes,
requiring them to summarize the main ideas and reflect on the reading
materials to reinforce comprehension and engagement.
