Learning Objectives
● Recognise that the mass and shape of an
object can affect if it floats or sinks.
● Use force diagrams to describe the effects of
forces.
● Conduct scientific enquiries to show factors of
floating and sinking.
● Suggest how to change the shape of a boat to
carry a greater mass and still float.
What do you think will happen to
the objects?
● Will they float?
● Will they sink?
If you place the cork on the surface of the water
in the bowl it will float
- If it’s light for its size, the water can push it up, and it will float.
Factors Affecting Floating and Sinking
● The shape of the object can determine how it behaves in water.
● Even if something is heavy, it might float if it’s shaped in a
way that spreads out its weight.
➢ A wide, flat shape helps an object float because it pushes more water
away.
❏ This increases the upward force (called upthrust) on the object
➢ If a shape is not flat and not wide, like a small, compact shape (e.g.,
a ball or a rock), it doesn’t displace much water.
