Objectives:
1. To understand the difference between TIG and MIG
2. To be able to perform TIG and MIG
3. To be aware of the importance of setting the right welding parameters

Introduction:
There are two main types of welding processes which are Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Tungsten
Inert Gas (TIG). In the MIG welding process, an electrical current is sent between a consumable
electrode and the workpiece to provide the necessary heat. In the TIG welding process, non-
consumable tungsten electrode and the metal to be welded. In this experiment, we will conduct
both types of welding.

Apparatus:
1. Apparatus for MIG process:

To conduct the experiment, we need the following tools and pieces of equipment:

a. (Note that those items are the main ones)

b. Workpiece
c. Welding Gun: Used as a director of welding wire.
d. Power source: It consists of a power source, wire feeder, and a welding gun
e. Shielding Gas: To protect the weld pool from atmospheric contaminants
f. Wire feed unit: to provide more wire
g. Wire Brush: to clean the surface of the workpiece and remove any dirt or dust
before the welding
h. Pliers: to cut the wire
i. Gas cylinder: to provide the required gas to perform weld
2. Apparatus for TIG process:
a. Flowmeter: To measure the instruments
b. Gas cylinder: to provide the required gas to perform weld
c. Shielding
d. Power source: It consists of a TIG torch and a foot pedal for amperage
adjustment.
e. Welding Torch: It holds the tungsten electrode.
f. Shielding Gas: To protect the weld pool from atmospheric contaminants
g. Regulator: to control the flow and pressure of the shielding gas
h. Work return: It is used for grounding
i. Optimal Remote Control: Used to adjust current and voltage

In addition, we need safety equipment such as helmets, aprons, and glasses.

Experimental Procedure:
a. Wear all the safety equipment
b. Set up the welding machine
c. Prepare the workpiece and install the wire and gas
d. Connect the positive to the work components and the negative to the electrode
e. Place the electrode in the workpiece and start welding the components together
f. Fill the space between
g. Do the same thing to the other side/s
h. Clean up the workpiece

Results and Discussions:

Welding a workpiece is not easy enough such that anyone can do it. Sometimes, welding with
incorrect parameters will lead to undesirable results such as defects. To perform the best possible
high-quality welding, the technician should be aware of these parameters:
1. Current and voltage
2. Welding speed
3. Shielding gas flow rate
4. Electrode stickout
5. Polarity

Those parameters are set by an engineer or a manager. Also, those parameters should be put on a
sheet (specification sheet) and placed near the welding area.

One problem that may arise is welding defects. See the figure below that shows the possible
defect from welding. There are many causes for this issue such as improper welding parameters,
lack of join preparation, insufficient shielding gas coverage, and more

Conclusion:
Tungsten inert gas (TIG) and metal inert gas (MIG) are the two primary types of welding
techniques. To generate the required heat during the MIG welding process, an electrical current
is passed between a consumable electrode and the workpiece. The metal to be welded and non-
consumable tungsten electrodes are used in the TIG welding process. Both kinds of welding will
be done in this experiment.
