APPARATUS : Metre scale graduated in centimetre and millimetre, retort stand ,50 gf weight
and thin thread
PRINCIPLE : According to the principle of moments, if a body is in equilibrium; then the sum of
the anticlockwise moments will be equal to the sum of the clockwise moments.
PROCEDURE :
1. Suspend the metre scale with its flat portion vertical in a loose thread loop suspended
from a retort stand.
2. adjust the position of the loop till the scale rest in a horizontal position. Note the position
of the centre of gravity of the scale in centimetre.
3. Tie a weight of 50 gf with a thread and suspend it at 10 cm mark on the left side of the
fulcrum by making a loop in the thread. The scale will be tilted on the left side. Slowly
increase the length of the right arm by pulling the scale on the right side across the loop
of the thread till it gaing balance in a horizontal position.
4. Note down the distance ‘x’ of the weight from the new position of the loop on the left side
and the distance ‘y’ of the C.G of the scale on the right side.
5. Repeat the experiment by changing the position of the loop containing the weight to 5,
15, 20, 25 cm respectively from the C.G.
6. The graph between’ x’ and ‘y’ taking ‘x’ on X axis and ‘y’ on Y axis is a straight line. The
slope of this line will give the ratio of the standard weight to the weight on the scale.
I.e. W/Wm
Therefore Slope = S = W/Wm
PRECAUTIONS:
1. The scale should be of uniform thickness.
2. The points where the weight and objects are suspended must be determined accurately
to minimise error.
CONCLUSION:
1. The weight of the metre scale = 139. 17 gf (by calculation)
2. The weight of the metre scale = 135.18 gf (by graph)
