Physical fitness
A basic definition of physical
fitness is "the ability to
complete daily tasks with
energy, reduce health risks
due to inactivity, and be able
to participate in a variety of
physical activities."
Physical activity boosts children’s
well-being. For example, active children
are more likely to be confident and feel
like they belong as well as concentrate
better at school.

Related Fitness
Combination of motor and skill related
fitness and is also important for better
health.
One component of fitness is your ability able to
train your body and mind to easily pick up new
skills. This is what’s known as skill-related fitness.
Slightly different from health-related fitness, which
is all about your physical health, skill-related
fitness is more concerned with your ability to
learn new skills and pull them off smoothly.
Skill-related fitness refers to abilities
that help you learn athletic skills.
There are 6 skill-related fitness
components: agility, speed, balance,
coordination, power, and reaction
time. If you have highly developed
skill-related fitness abilities, you’re
more likely to have an easier time
mastering different athletic skills.
Agility
The ability to change
and control the
direction and position
of the body while
maintaining a
constant, rapid motion.

Tennis players need quick footwork and the ability to

react swiftly to the ball's direction.
Balance
The ability to control or
stabilize the body when
a person is standing still
or moving.

Inline skaters need balance to stay stable on single-line wheels,

control movements, adapt to surfaces, and avoid injuries.
Coordination
The ability to use two
or more body parts at
the same time.

Basketball players need coordination to use multiple body parts simultaneously for
dribbling, passing, shooting, and defending effectively.
Speed
The ability to move your
body or parts of your
body swiftly.

Track and field athletes need speed to run fast and finish races quickly.
Power
The ability to move
the body parts swiftly
while applying the
maximum force of the
muscles.

High jumpers need body power to jump higher, run faster, and maintain control during
their jump.
React Time
The ability to respond
quickly to what you
hear, see, or feel.

Swimmers need to react quickly to the starting signal to get a fast,

powerful launch off the block.

Effective Ways to
Get Fit and Healthy
As far as a healthy lifestyle is concerned;
two factors come into play - your diet and
the physical activity you indulge in. Couch
potatoes and junk food lovers are
generally the ones who suffer from health
problems such as obesity and diabetes,
while people who follow the healthy way
of living tend to have a longer life, free of
various ailments.
PROPER EXERCISE
Experts recommend that you need to
exercise at least for half an hour
every day.
Even simple walking for an hour or so
can help in burning calories, and
improving the metabolism of your
body.
HEALTHY DIET
When we talk about a healthy
diet, it includes the food as well as
the dietary habits of the person.
It's important to go for a balanced
diet. Junk food is a strict no! These
unhealthy foods are of no help for
your overall health.
HEALTHY DIET
Moreover, you also need to monitor 'how' you
eat. Even though a proper breakfast is a must,
stuffing yourself early in the morning and
going hungry for the rest of the day is not a
wise thing to do. It is better to have small
meals frequently throughout the day, than
having one heavy meal and going hungry for
hours after that.
Activity
Answer the following questions (at least 4 sentences each
number). Write it on one whole sheet of paper (yellow pad).
1. How do the components of skill-related fitness interact to
improve performance in specific sports or activities?
2. If you could only train one skill-related fitness component to
improve your performance in a specific sport, which one would
you choose and why?
3. How might improving skill-related fitness components benefit
activities outside of sports, such as daily tasks or emergency
situations?
