I. Case study: Business performance

A. Scenario
The database of The Viet Nam Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) is an important source of
datafor any scholars doing research on Vietnam economy and its micro dynamics. In 2015,
thesurvey was carried out with a sample size over 2500 enterprises from nine provinces across the
country. (https://www.wider.unu.edu/database/viet-nam-sme-database)
The survey instrument consists of three modules: (i) a main enterprise questionnaire for owners or
managers; (ii) an employee questionnaire administered to a random subset of employees in a
quarter of randomly selected enterprises; and (iii) an economic accounts module.

B. Questions
Each group will need to create and submit their unique random sample after clean data.
Submit your sample with the original ID column.

Part 1. Investment – Sample 1

Investment plays a pivotal role in the development and sustainable growth of a company. It serves
as a critical driver in various aspects of business operations, facilitating expansion, innovation,
and long-term competitiveness.
1. Check the diference in investment due to province in Vietnam, 2015. Use a .05 level of
significance.

2. At the 0.05 level of significance test for any significant differences in investment due to
province, types of ownership, and interaction in Vietnam, 2015.

You should show:

• Data collection: Collect data on the investment amounts for three provinces and two types
of ownership (sample size at least 30 for each). Explain the choice of provinces by a
combination of relevance to the research question, the availability of data, and any unique
characteristics that make the location particularly suitable for the study.

• Organize Data: Structure the data into a table format where

o the 1st column represents the original number

o the 2nd column represents different provinces,

o the 3rd column shows types of ownership,

o the 4th column includes the investment amount.

• Summary Statistics: Calculate summary statistics (mean, median, standard deviation) for
the investment amounts in each province. Create box plots or bar charts to visually
compare the distribution of investment amounts across provinces.

• Statistical Testing:

o Use analysis of variance to test for any significant differences in investment due to
province. Check all the assumptions of the inference technique you use. Are the
assumptions satisfied? Explain.

o Apply the same process to test for differences in investment due to province and
type of ownership.

• Interpretation: Interpret the results from the statistical tests. If significant differences are
found, consider the factors contributing to these differences, such as economic conditions,
government policies, or geographic factors.

Part 2. Assets – Sample 2

Assets are fundamental to corporate and personal financial management, serving as the
resources that generate economic value over time.
Building a Regression model with the target variable being the total company's assets.
Choose independent variables. Explore how total assets are related to these independent
variables through relevant theories, articles, and other academic sources.
Interpret the output.

II. Requirements and Other Information

A. Weight
The case study (including report and presentation) is worth 20% of your total mark for the
course.

B. Due date
Due date for analysis report and presentation slides (soft copy): it is due by 4:30 pm on
Friday in the last week of Lecture lesson. Submit a hard copy of your slides to your tutor
right before your presentation time.

C. Objectives

1. Apply statistical techniques to a practical problem in the form of a case study.

2. Be able to analyze, interpret and draw meaningful conclusions from problem context.
3. Be able to check the assumptions for the statistical techniques used.
4. Be able to select the right statistical technique for the specified problem.
5. Be able to use the R language to address a range of practical issues in Statistics.

D. Group requirement
This is a group assignment. Tutor forms random groups of 6-8 members. This task should be
completed by the end of week 6.

E. How your mark is calculated

All members of each group are required to have discussion and agree on a final peer rating
(out of 100%). Please refer to the Peer Evaluation Form for detailed instructions. Make sure
you read the instructions carefully before you fill out the form.

Your final mark for the case study will be equal to Your group result * Your peer rating.
For example, if your group result is 18 out of 20, and your peer rating is 90%, then your final
mark for the case study will be 18*90/100 = 16.2 (out of 20). Attach the evaluation form at
the end of the report.

F. Submission Requirements:
1. Report
• 4 to 10 type written content pages (1.5 times spacing).
• 12 point font (Times New Roman)

2. Presentation Slides:
• Your slide materials should be adequate for a 10-to-15-minute-speaking presentation.

3. Submission Method:
• Report and presentation slides must be submitted onto Teams with the following
information:
o Subject: “Case Study Report – Tutorial Class – Group Number ”
o Attachments: Your report, Data and/or slides.
• The cover page of the report must contain the following information:
o Group members’ full name (with Vietnamese symbols) and student ID
o Tutorial number
o Tutor’s name

G. Requirements for Report

You are not required to include the sections commonly found in written reports. For example, you
do not have to include an Introduction or a Conclusion in the report. However, you are required
to provide written answers to each of the questions presented in the case study (please see the
section on the case study description and questions). Each answer should contain all the necessary
information to address the corresponding question. In other words, each answer shouldbe complete
in its own right. Include all relevant R code and R outputs in your answers.

Important note about critical thinking: where appropriate, you are expected to demonstrate your
ability to think critically. This means that every conclusion should be backed up byappropriate
reasons and/or evidence. Do not jump to conclusion without considering related issues. Remember
to state the limitations of your technique/method as required by the case study.

H. Requirements for Presentation

1. Each group needs to presentation on how you may use hypothesis testing, and regression
analysis in your future studies and career.

2. The presentation should directly address the questions of the case study and focus on the
main points. Each group nominates 3-4 members to present. All members of the group
are required to attend the presentation and be ready to answer questions. You should
bring all the documents used for the assignment to your presentation. You should be
prepared to demonstrate the use of R for random questions of the case study.
3. Make sure you keep to the allotted time (10-15 minutes).

I. Plagiarism
Please note that plagiarism in any forms is strictly prohibited. No mark will be given if
students are caught plagiarizing the works of others.
