• Sealing fittings shall be listed for use with one or more specific
compounds – NEC Article 501.15(C)(1) and 505.16(D)(1)
• Conduit seals compound thickness shall be equal to the conduit
trade size and never less than 5/8” – NEC Article 501.15(C)(3) and
505.16(D)(3)

• Splices and taps shall not be made in a sealing fitting nor shall a
fitting containing a splice or tap be filled with compound –
NEC Article 501-15(C)(4) and 505.16(D)(4)
• The cross section area of the conductors permitted in a seal shall
not exceed 25% unless the seal is specifically identified for a
higher percentage fill - NEC Article 501.15(C)(6) and 505.16(D)(5)

Cable Seal Applications
• In Class I, Division 1, cables shall be sealed at all terminations
• In Class I, Division 2, cables entering enclosures required to be
explosionproof shall be sealed at point of entrance
• Cables with a gas/ vaportight continuous sheath with overall
jacket (capable of transmitting gases), shall be sealed after
removing the jacket and sealing around each individual conductor
• Exception – Cables not capable of transmitting gases (twisted
pair) do not require removal of shield or separation of conductors
• Exception – Cables capable of transmitting gases may be viewed
as one conductor provided the cable is sealed in the conduit with
18” of the enclosure and at the cable end within the enclosure

• Cables not capable of transmitting gases (twisted pair) do not require
removal of shield or separation of conductors – NEC 505.16(B)(5)

• Cable shall be sealed at the point at which they leave the Zone 1
location except when sealed at the termination point – NEC 505.16(B)(8)
