it a highly practical solution for urban maintenance and residential applications. Through the
integration of mechanical engineering, electronics, and automation, this project provides an innovative
approach to improving the maintenance of drainage systems, reducing operational costs, and
enhancing safety by minimizing direct human involvement in hazardous environments. The prototype
has demonstrated effective performance in small-scale tests, indicating potential for further
optimization and large-scale applications
1. Introduction
The "Fabrication of Automatic Drain and Gutter Cleaning Machine" is a project aimed at
addressing the persistent challenges of maintaining clean and clear drainage systems in urban areas.
Over time, gutters and drains become clogged with debris, leaves, dirt, and other waste materials,
leading to water stagnation, flooding, and potential health hazards. Traditional cleaning methods are
often labor-intensive, time-consuming, and inefficient, with workers having to manually remove
blockages, which can be hazardous and unpleasant.
Automatic drainage water cleaning and control system using auto mechanism proposed to
overcome the real time problems. With the continued expansion of industries, the problem of sewage
water must be urgently resolved due to the increasing sewage problems from industries of the
surrounding environment. Our proposed system is to cleaning and control the drainage level using
auto mechanism technique. Auto mechanism is the major controlling unit and the drainage level a
monitor by municipal .In this system we used hand wheel, chain, driver, bucket, frame. By integrating
automation and mechanical innovation, this project aims to provide a sustainable solution to the
ongoing challenge of drain and gutter cleaning, enhancing urban infrastructure and public health.
1.1. Components of Cam and Sine Mechanisms
Drain or Gutter Cleaning Machine consists of the following components to fulfill the requirements of
complete operation. They are:
Grid (Lifter)
Chain drives
Sprockets
Mesh
Motor
Waste Tub container
MS Frame
The device is placed across drain so that only water flow through screen, the waste like bottles,
plastic etc. Floating in drain are lifted by lifter which is attached with screen. Screen is connected to
the shaft which is driven by chain with the help of DC motor. When motor runs the chain start the
circulation making screen with lifter to lift up waste, further it is connected to a horizontal screening
and waste stored in a container.
2. Literature Survey
Automated drain cleaning technologies have been explored in various industries to improve
efficiency and reduce the need for manual labor. One of the significant advancements is the use of
robotic systems for pipeline cleaning. According to Li et al. (2017), robots designed to clean sewage
and stormwater systems have been equipped with tools such as high-pressure water jets and
mechanical brushes to remove blockages. These systems can navigate pipelines autonomously,
helping to prevent major clogs and reduce maintenance costs.

K.kumaresan et. all, [3] During the study of automation technology they realized that Automation is a
technology concerned with his application of mechanical, electronic and computer based systems to
operate and control production. This system is used to operate automatic sewage cleaning
3. Objectives
Automate the cleaning process to minimize human intervention: Incorporate sensors, motors, and
control systems to enable the machine to detect and remove debris without the need for manual
operation.
Efficiently remove blockages and debris : Design cleaning mechanisms (e.g., brushes, vacuum
systems, or rotating blades) capable of clearing various types of blockages such as leaves, mud,
and waste materials from drains and gutters.
Ensure mobility and adaptability for different drainage systems: Build the machine with features
like adjustable dimensions, wheels, or tracks to allow it to move through various sizes and shapes
of gutters and drains, both residential and commercial.
Focus on cost-effectiveness and material sustainability: Choose durable, affordable materials for
construction to ensure long-term performance while keeping production and maintenance costs
low. Prioritize eco-friendly components where possible.
Enhance safety and reliability of operation: Implement safety features such as automatic
shutdowns, emergency stop buttons, or fail-safe mechanisms to ensure that the machine operates
without posing risks to users or bystanders.
Friendly operation and easy maintenance: Ensure the machine is intuitive to operate with a
straightforward control interface. Include features that simplify regular maintenance, such as easy
access to components that require cleaning or repair.
Ensure scalability and versatility of the system: The machine should be adaptable to different
environments, from residential buildings with smaller gutters to large industrial or commercial
settings requiring more powerful systems.
Research and incorporate environmentally friendly solutions: Consider energy-efficient motors,
low-impact cleaning technologies, and the use of recyclable or biodegradable materials where
applicable to make the machine environmentally sustainable.
4. Methodology
The device is place across a drain so that only water flows through the lower basement. Floating
waste like bottles plastic cans covers etc is lifted which are connected to the chain. The chain revolves
with the sprocket wheel which is driven by the motor. The energy provided to the motor is electrical
energy. When motor runs the chain starts to circulate making the lifter to lift up. The wastage material
are lifted by lifter teeth and stored in storage or collecting bin. Once the collecting bin is full, the waste
materials are removed from the bin.
The first step in the methodology involves conducting a “literature review and research” to
understand the existing systems for drain and gutter cleaning. By studying current technologies, we
can identify the limitations of existing machines and gather insights into the types of blockages and
debris commonly encountered in gutters. This will help in designing a machine that is capable of
tackling a variety of obstacles effectively. The next phase is the *design phase, where the overall
structure and components of the machine are conceptualized. During this stage, the working principle
of the system, including how the machine will move, detect blockages, and remove debris, will be
determined. Detailed CAD (Computer-Aided Design) models of all components—such as the frame,
cleaning apparatus, motors, and sensors—will be created for a clearer visual representation and to
ensure accuracy in construction.
Once the design is finalized, the next step is component selection, where the most suitable motors,
sensors, and power sources are chosen based on the machine's operational requirements. Motors with
appropriate torque and speed will be selected to drive the cleaning mechanisms, while sensors like
proximity or ultrasonic sensors will be used for navigation and blockage detection. Additionally, the
material for the machine's frame and components will be carefully chosen to ensure durability and
resistance to corrosion. After the components are selected, the project moves to the **fabrication and
assembly* stage. This involves cutting, welding, and assembling the machine's structural components,
as well as integrating the cleaning mechanisms (e.g., rotating brushes or vacuum systems) and
ensuring they are securely attached. The sensors and automation systems will also be integrated into
the machine, allowing for autonomous operation.
5. Conclusion
The problem of drainage blockage due to plastic waste and other solid waste can be eliminated by
using of ADCM system. Cleaning of drains/gutters has always been a problem. Labours cleaning
gutters & drain seems unethical and also leads to a high risk of them catching infections or poisoning
due to large amounts of waste/chemicals in them. So here we provide a fully automated drain gutter
cleaning mechanism to tackle these modern day gutter jamming issues. Our system uses an automated
gutter/drain cleaning system that lets fluids flow through it but catches large solid waste like bottles &
plastic and accumulates it. So gutter cleaners need to just clean these gutter cleaning systems installed
at points instead of cleaning entire gutter floors
6. FUTURE SCOPE
We gathered information and equipment required for then Automatic Drain cleaning system.
• Studied the construction and principle of ADCM.
• To Fabricate the ADCM and to test its working.
We hope that this will be among the most versatile and interchangeable in cleaning system. As the
project has been based on the concept, to integrate he benefits for human health, societal concerns and
national cleanliness policy. Therefore it covers many sections of proportionate benefits to the all
sphere of our present life.
