17 Ce 72 Assignment#1

The document outlines an assignment for modeling a reinforced concrete multistorey building using ETABS software. It provides specific data such as the number of storeys, grid spacing, and material properties, along with a detailed procedure for creating the model in ETABS. The steps include defining materials, section properties, and drawing beams, columns, and slabs in the software.

MODELLING A REINFORCED CONCRETE MULTISTOREY
BUILDING IN ETABS
GIVEN DATA:
• Registration no. = 72
• No. of storey = 2 + Rx0.1
= 2 + (72)(0.1)
= 9 storeys
• Typical Storey height = 12 ft
• Bottom storey = 10 ft
• No. of grids both in X and Y direction = 2 + Rx0.1
= 9 grids in both directions
• X direction Grid Spacing = 10 +Rx0.1
= 17.2 ft
• Y direction Grid Spacing = 1 + 8 + Rx0.1
= 16.2 ft.
• Compressive strength of concrete for beams/columns = 5000 psi
• Compressive strength of concrete for slabs = 3500 psi
PROCEDURE:
• Open ETABS 17.0.1, following is the interface of ETABS 17.0.1
• Click on ”New Model” and choose “Use Built in settings” with steel design code AISC
360-16 and concrete design code ACI 318-14. Click on Ok

• New window will be opened that requires grid data and storey data to be entered. For grid
spacing and number of grids, click on “Uniform grid Spacing” and provide number of
grids in X and Y direction equals to 9 and grids spacing in X direction to be 17 ft and in
Y direction to be 16 ft.

Next enter the storey data with no. of storeys to be 8 and typical storey height to be 12 ft
and bottom storey height to be 10 ft. click OK to save the values.
• Grids will be displaced according to spacing in both directions provided and according to
storeys entered. Both 2D Plan view and 3D view will be displayed with “Model
Explorer” tab at extreme left and 3D view tab at extreme right.

• Click on “Define” and then select “Material Properties” to define concrete material for
slab, beams and columns. Click on “Add new material” and enter region as US and

Material type as concrete, for beams/column select concrete grade of 5000 psi from grade
dropdown. click OK. A new window will be opened showing various properties of 5000
psi concrete. Give this material a name of “ 5000 Psi concrete”. Click OK to save this
new material.
Again click on “New Material” to define concrete material for slab with compressive
strength of 3500 psi. Select 3000 psi from concrete grade dropdown. Later on click on “

modify/show material design properties” and enter concrete compressive strength to be

3500 Psi. give this material name as “3500 Psi concrete” enter modulous of elasticity
3372165.476 psi for grade 3500 psi concrete.

• Click on “Define” then select “Section Properties” and then choose “Frame Sections”.
Filter properties list by “Concrete Rectangular”. Select “ConcBm” from filterest list and
then click on modify/show properties.
From material dropdown list select “5000Psi Concrete” and assume dimensions of beam as b
= 12” and depth = 20”. Click on “ modify/show rebars” and choose rebar material as Grade
60 steel and define concrete cover to be 2.5 inch for both top and bottom. Click Ok
Then select “ConcCol” and click on Modify/show properties and select material “5000Psi
Conc” and dimensions to be 12”x12”. Choose rebar size of #6 for longitudinal bars from
rebars data modifier and #4 for ties. Click Ok
• Next step is to draw beams, columns and slab panels. Proceed as follows
Click Draw > Draw beams/columns/brace objects > Quick Draw beams/columns. Quick
draw features allows user to draw beams and columns conveniently as ETABS
automatically detects grids for beam placement and grids intersection for column
placement. After selecting quick draw beams, in properties of object tab below model
explorer tab change property of beam to “ConcBm” as defined earlier.
• Draw selection window to select grids and draw beams instead of drawing beams one by
one. Similar procedure will be adopted for drawing columns. Select “all storeys” option
to draw beams columns and slab on all floors at same time.
• Click on “Define” then select section properties and choose slab sections from dropdown.
Then click on slab1 and click on “modify/show properties” and choose material as
3500Psi Concrete. Enter slab thickness as 8 inches.
• To draw slab panels proceed as follows
Draw > Draw floor/wall objects > Quick Draw floor/wall
Choose Slab1 from properties of object tab then hover over each panel to display dashed
slab panel and click to assign slab to that panel. Continue drawing that until all panels are
covered.
