7 E’S Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Science (Grade 10)

Charles Law

I. OBJECTIVES
Content Standard:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of how gases behave based on the
motion and relative distances between gas particles.
Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to:
A. Investigate the relationship between volume and temperature at constant pressure of
a gas. (MELC)
B. Understand that at constant pressure, the volume of a given gas is inversely
proportional to its temperature.
C. Apply the volume-temperature interrelationship in problem solving.

Strategy : Cooperative Learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, and Discovery

Approach
Science Skills/ Processes: Inquiring, Inferring, and Analyzing

B. Developmental Activities
a. Motivation
The class will play a game (Compress or Spread-Out). The teacher will show a
4-picture scenario either hot or cold scenarios. If the picture shows a hot scenario the
class will spread out and if the scenario is cold, they will come close to each other
and compress.
b. Motivate Questions
The teacher will ask the students the following to connect the “Compress or
Spread-Out” game that gas molecules behavior and temperature is inversely
proportional to each other.
1. Why we need to spread out when the area is hot?
2. Why we need to come close and compress the area is very cold?

E. Explore

The teacher will group the class into two groups and will do a simple laboratory
activity called “Expand and Shrink it”. The teacher will give each group the instructions to be
followed for the laboratory activity, materials needed ang a piece of paper. The two group

are given 5 minutes to do the laboratory activity, collect the gathered data, brainstorming,
and answer the following guide questions for the group presentation after the given time.

Expand and Shrink it

Objective: To be able to observe the relationship between temperature and volume on the
behavior of gas.

Materials Needed: 2 pics rubber balloons, warm water, cold water, measuring tape/string
and ruler.

Procedure:

Group 1 (Learning Area 1)

1. Inflate the balloon and measure its diameter. Mark it as Balloon 1.
2. Immerse the Balloon 1 in warm water in three minutes. Observe what happen.
3. Measure the new size of the balloon and compare it from the size before it was
immersed into the warm water.
Group 2 (Learning Area 2)

1. Inflate the other balloon and measure its diameter. It should be the same as Balloon
1. Mark it as Balloon 2.
2. Immerse the Balloon 2 in cold water in three minutes. Observe what happen.
3. Measure the new size of the balloon and compare it from the size before it was
immersed into the cold water.
Answer the following guide questions based from the activity done.
Guide Questions:

Group 1 (Learning Area 1)

1. What have you observed to the Balloon 1?
2. What are the possible factors that makes the balloons changed in size?
3. Illustrate your observation.
Group 2 (Learning Area 2)

1. What have you observed to the Balloon 2?

2. What are the possible factors that makes the balloons changed in size?

3. Illustrate your observation)

(See attached document for the sample rubrics to be used)

F. Explain
The teacher will let the two groups to present their observation from what they
observe during the laboratory activity. The teacher will also ask questions during the
presentation.

G. Elaboration
The teacher will elaborate the two groups presentation and elaborate the lesson
further.

Jacques Alexandre Cèsar Charles, a French physicist observed the effect of

temperature on the volume of a gas. Charles Law states that a constant pressure, the

volume of a gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature in Kelvin which it may
express as V ∝ T.

For two conditions, Charles’ Law is written (where P and n is constant)

Rearranging Charles’ Law in solve for V1, V2, T1, and T2;

V2 = V1 x T2 V1 = V1 x T2 T1 = T2 x V1 T2 = T1 x V2
T1 T1 V2 V1

Applying Charles’ Law Equation in a word problem:

a. A balloon has a volume of 785 mL at 21ºC. If the temperature drops to 0ºC, what is
the new volume (P is constant)?

Given:
V1 = 785 mL T1 = 21ºC convert to Kelvin; 21+273 = 294 K

T2 = 0ºC + 273 = 273 K V2 = unknown

Formula:

V2 = V1 x T 2
Solution: T1

785 mL x 273 785 mL x 273 K

V2 = V2 =
K 294 K
V2 = V2 = 729 mL

b. A sample of oxygen gas has a volume of 420 mL at a temperature of 18 º. At what
temperature (in ºC) will the volume of the oxygen be 640 mL.
Given:
V1 = 420 mL T1 = 291 K
T2 = unknown V2 = 640 mL

Formula:

T2 = T 1 x V2
Solution: V1

291 K x 640 mL 291 K x 640 mL

T2 = T2 =

T2 = 186 240 K T2 = 443 K Convert to Celsius

T2 = 443 K – 273 K = 170 T2 = 170ºC

After the teacher elaborate the lesson, the teacher will ask the class some questions
to check if they already understand the lesson very carefully.

H. Evaluate
The teacher will give a set of word problem as an evaluation to check the knowledge
of the students from the lesson.

Solve for the unknown value:

1. At 20 degrees Celsius, the volume of Chlorine gas is 15 dm 3. Compute for the
resulting volume if the temperature is adjusted to 318 K provided that the pressure
remains the same.
I. Extend
The teacher will ask the class to answer the following questions provided. The class
should explain and defend their answer.

Read the sentences below.

1. If you put a bottle of deodorant on a direct sunlight or high temperature. Why do you
think this happened?

2. Why is so difficult to breathe during and do physical activities like jogging during winter
days? Support your answer.
