2. APPLICATION:
2.1. Dry shake is applied in two applications:
1st application: 60% of material} at specified
2nd application: 40% of material} coverage rates
2.2. Using scaffold boards supported at each end to raise them above the wet concrete, apply the
first shake, broadcasting the material evenly over the surface.
2.3. The applied material will change from a dry cement color to a darker color once absorption of
moisture has taken place. This indicates that material is ready to be floated.
2.4. Using a wooden float only, float the material ensuring that moisture is brought to the surface.
Any light patches must be floated again until they exhibit the same appearance as the
surrounding surface.
2.5. Apply the second shake (40%) as per the first shake.
2.6. When the surface is firm enough to support a man, the concrete can be power trowelled.
3. CURING:
3.1. Curing compound is to be applied such as MasterKure 101 by short nap roller or spray to
the
finished surface at a rate of 1 litre per 5m².
3.2. Where an extra degree of chemical resistance is required 2 coats are to be applied.
3.3. Seal off and protect against wind, water, spillages and traffic for 48 hours.
4. APPLICATION BY LINEAR MECHANICAL SPREADER:
4.1. Set up the equipment for the strip to be treated, but do not load the hoppers until shortly
before
the spreader will operate.
4.2. Place and level the concrete.
4.3. Determine by experience the correct time to apply the dry shake.
4.4. Having pre-filled the hoppers with the MasterTop 100 start the spreader.
4.5. Once the spreader has made the pre-determined number of passes to deposit 60% of the
MasterTop 100, allow the shake to absorb moisture from the concrete.
4.6. When the shake becomes a darker color, and the concrete surface can support a power
float,
float the shake into the surface.
4.7. When the first layer has been floated into the surface, spread the remaining 40% over the
bay,
wait for the color change to take place, and then float the shake into the surface.
4.8. When the surface is firm enough, use a power trowel to give the final dense finish to the
surface.
5. CURING:
5.1. Curing compound is to be applied such as MasterKure 101 by short nap roller or spray to
the
finished surface at a rate of 1 litre per 5m².
5.2. Where an extra degree of chemical resistance is required 2 coats are to be applied.
5.3. Seal off and protect against wind, water, spillages and traffic for 48 hours.
6. WATCHPOINTS:
6.1 Dry shake applications should not take place in direct sunlight or when hot winds are blowing.
This
will avoid "bread crusting" occurring, i.e. top 5-10mm of surface dries whilst concrete beneath is
still wet. This often results in tearing of the surface when trowelling.
6.2 As with any concrete slab or bay, curing is of paramount importance and should take place
immediately upon completion of finishing.
6.3 Subsequent coatings and finishes may be applied, but will depend on the curing compound;
surface texture, etc. (refer to BASF’s Technical Services Department for advice
