Module 5: RECREATIONAL DANCING

Introduction:

This module will introduce you to the different recreational dances. Recreational
dancing is a very helpful attribute on how to interact in all ages. It teaches poise,
manners, and how to relate comfortably to the opposite sex in a time when social freedom
is placing increased pressures on the students. Moreover, recreational dancing Ballroom
is good form of exercise, good fun, and something one can do in life. It is also an
important outlet for suppressed emotions and a way of keeping up with the world.

This module consists of the following lesson:

Content: Line Dance, Cha-Cha-Cha, Swing and Hip – Hop

Recreational dance refers to any form of dancing that is done primarily for its
social, educational or health benefits: it includes social dance and amateur dance
instruction and performance. According to the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research
Institute, dancing is among 12 favorite recreational activities for Canadians of all ages.

Recreational dance is dancing without any real structure. Recreational dance are
meant to be fun and freeing, and the goal is for dancers to focus less on form and
technique and more on the joy they feel from dancing.

Today, most dancing is about recreation and self expression, although it can be
done as a competitive activity. Dancing is enjoyable way to be more physically active
and stay fit. Line dance, Cha-cha-cha, swing and hip-hop are examples of recreational
dances.

Line Dance:

History:

A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which


a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the
same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.The dances are done one-wall,
two-wall, or four-wall.

The enormous popularity of American Country Line Dancing is growing with an


enthusiasm, energy and the drive which seems unstoppable. Not only in America, but in
Europe, too, people have discovered the fun of stretchin’ denim on the dance floor.

It owes some of its popularity to the Disco Line Dancing of the 1970’s following
the Saturday Night Fever boom. However, the traditional moves of American Country
dancing were not forgotten and some of them have been adapted for Line Dancing. Men
in discos were never comfortable with the idea of using their arms and dancing in the
style of John Travolta, so the less ostentatious, more laid-back style of Country dancing
where thumbs are left tucked in the tops of jeans, was bound to be a winner.

Line dances are primarily composed of different free style steps which are
performed in a particular pattern and order. The dancers perform the same movements
and sequence of steps. There are three distinct characteristics of a line dance. First, all
dancers stand and face the same direction. Second, each dancer in the line performs the
exact same sequence of steps and movements. Lastly, each line dance concludes with a
one-fourth turn to the left (quarter-turn) to change the direction.

The light, bouncy rhythm of Cha ChaCha is a Cuban innovation of the old basic
latin dances. It is said to be a variant of Mambo. Like most Latin dances Cha ChaCha is
done with the foot nearly close to the floor and the knees are easy and lead forward with
the step. Holding the body firmly, a toe step should be done on a backward step. The
dancers’ hips are relaxed to allow free movement of the pelvic section which has a strong
hip motion as the knees straighten. The Cha ChaCha chasse is taken with very small steps
in place or travelling.

The character of the dance, like the music, is vibrant, flamboyant, playful and
effervesces with unique sense of fun to which dancers the world over can relate and
enjoy.

The catchy Cha ChaCha rhythm is in 4/4 time signature. Originally the dance was
done on the offbeat of the measure like Mambo, but for recreational purposes, the on beat
rhythm is used for the beginners to learn the dance easier.

The name itself derived from the splitting of the fourth beat of music to give it
that unmistakable and catchy Cha ChaCha rhythm.

SWING

Swing dance" is a group of dances that developed with the swing style of jazz
music in the 1920s-1950s, the origin of the dances predating popular "swing era" music.

The most well-known of these dances is the Lindy Hop, a fusion of jazz, tap,
breakaway, and Charleston, which originated in Harlem in the early 1920s, but includes a
number of other styles such as Balboa, Shag, West Coast Swing, and Boogie Woogie to
name a few. While the majority of swing dances began in African American communities
as vernacularAfrican American dances, some swing era dances such as West Coast
Swing and the Balboa developed in white communities.

Swing dance was not used as a blanket term for this group of dances until the
latter half of the twentieth century. Historically, the term "Swing" referred to the style of
Jazz music, which inspired the evolution of the dance. Swing dance" is a group of dances

HIP-HOP

History

Hip-hop dance is a popular street dance style, popular among the youth, usually
performed to its own genre of music. It comprises a variety of styles, mainly the so-called
b-boying, locking and popping. It has evolved from the sub-culture popularized by dance
groups in the United States.

Hip-hop began in the early 1970s when DJs and MCs began to experiment and
produce music composed of poetry over instrumental tracks or dubbed versions of music
records. One of the very first DJs/MCs was DJ Kool Herc, a native of Kingston, Jamaica
who brought this form of music to Bronx, N.Y.

As hip-hop began to catch on, different artists began to develop their own style
and “hip-hop dance” emerged. Today, there are multiple types of hip-hop dance, but it all
began with just three: popping, locking, and breaking. People began to form dance crews
to show off their moves and to battle other crews. It was through these battles and the
collaboration of the three types of hip-hip dance, that new dance forms and techniques
were created and became an integral part of hip-hop culture.

Hip-hop dance allows people to express themselves without barriers though


“freestyle” dance or through more structured choreography, where dancers have the
opportunity to practice style and technique. After perfecting the fundamentals of hip-hop
dance, dancers have an easier time learning and creating new techniques, dance styles,
and routines.

In the Philippines, hip-hop has since become a significant highlight in the


contemporary dance scene. Numerous hip-hop dance groups have been formed in
different parts of the country since the early 2000s, when the dance firs became popular
in the country.
Local dance competitions are held everywhere as a form of community
entertainment. These events give the so-called hip-hop dance crews to attain a certain
degree of fame. The completion often goes from region to region, gathering huge crowds
at every stop along the way.

International hip-hop dance competitions are also held, giving Philippine hip-hop
dance groups mainstream exposure. At international hip-hop events, the dance develops
further from the exchange of styles among dance crews from different parts of the world
presenting their visual artistry.

There have also emerge sub-genres within the main hip-hop genre, like vogue
femme and waacking, some of the latest enhancements to Philippine hip-hop
choreography, which add a feminine touch to the dance. These choreographies put a

strong emphasis on musicality and interpretation of the music and its rhythm. Krumping
and lyrical hip-hop are other sub-genres that enhance the standard hip-hop choreography.

Meanwhile, famous international hip-hop choreographers also hold dance


workshops in the Philippines to share and influence their style to the Filipinos. The
workshops all the more bring the Philippine hip-hop at par with international standards.

For Philippine hip-hop dancers, the dance is not just a hobby, but a lifestyle.
There have sprouted fashion and behavior unique among them. They are a league of their
own.
