7. Practice health protocols at all times.

Background Information for Learners

PARTS OF A COMPUTER
Objectives:

 identify the different parts of a computer;

 describe the parts of a computer and its function; and
 design a computer using any drawing software or applications

Why does a computer need so many

parts?
What do they do?

How are they connected?

Let us learn about the most important parts of a computer.

CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU)
The Central Processing Unit (CPU), also called a
processor, is like the brain of the computer. It is
located inside the computer case on the motherboard.
It executes instructions in response to commands.
Whenever we press a key, click the mouse, or start an
application, we send instructions to the CPU. These
are all executed by the CPU.
A processor’s speed is measured in Megahertz (MHZ), or
Gigahertz (GHZ). Higher the hertz, the faster the process in of instructions. The
CPU is generally a 2 inch ceramic square with a silicon chip located inside. The
chip is usually about the size of a thumbnail.

MONITOR
A monitor is one of the output devices of a computer.
The display sharpness depends on the size and
resolution of the monitor. Resolution refers to the
number of rows of dots and the number of columns of
dots.
A monitor has a number of individual dots known as
pixels. The size of display depends on two factors:

- The aspect ratio (the ratio of width to the height of the screen)
- The screen size (measure from one corner to the other corner diagonally
opposite).
Currently LCD technology is commonly being used for monitors. There are many
sizes of monitors. Popular screen sizes are 15, 17, 19 and 21 inches. The resolution
of screens varies. Example: 800x600 pixels to 1200x1024. For professional
applications, such as medical imaging or public information displays, monitors as
large as 40 inches or larger, with higher resolutions, are being used.

KEYBOARD
A computer keyboard is one of the
primary input devices used with a
computer. Similar to an
electric typewriter, a keyboard is

composed of buttons that create letters, numbers, and symbols, as well as other
functions.
A computer keyboard is considered an input device because it only sends data to a
computer and does not receive any information back.

keyboard shortcut keys.

MOUSE
A computer mouse is a handheld hardware input
device that controls a cursor in a GUI (graphical
user interface) and can move and
select text, icons, files, and folders on your
computer. For desktop computers, the mouse is
placed on a flat surface (e.g., mouse pad or desk) in
front of your computer. The picture is an example of
a desktop computer mouse with two buttons and a
wheel.

idea of how a computer mouse function.

Activity

After reading the lecture, do the following:

A. WHO AM I? Identify which part of a computer is being described.
1. I have letters, numbers, and symbols on me. Users use me by pressing my

keys. Who am I? ____________

2. I have a frame around myself. My image is always changing depending on
what you are doing. Who am I? ___________________
3. I am the most important part. I make all the other parts of the computer work
together. I do most of the work and I follow your directions. Who am I?
_____________________
4. I control the movement of a pointer on the screen. I have buttons and a wheel
that can be clicked to perform actions. Who am I? ________________

D. Design your own computer and its parts and functions using any drawing
software or applications. You may use Paint Tool, Adobe Photoshop or any similar
programs available in your device. When using android phones, you may download
similar applications in Play Store.
