COMMUNITY POWER AND LEADERSHIP

What is community Power?

We define community power as a project or approach in which:
 Local stakeholders own a majority share of the project or organization, or
 Community members or locally based organization control decisions related to the
project, or
 The majority or the projects of organization’s social and economic benefits are
distributed locally.
 It is the power of the community where in organizations, institutions and other groups
in the community engage and collaborate together in order to obtain the community’s
objective. The majority of the project or organizations social and economic benefits
are distributed locally
 Each organization has a leader to lead and manage the group. A leader has great
role in motivating members and other to move with a passion toward a common
goal.

LEADERSHIP
The ability to develop vision that motivates others to move with a passion toward a
common goal. So leadership is a process by which a person influence others to accomplish
an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent.

According to M. Chemers “leadership is a process of social influence in which one person

can enlist the aid and support others in the accomplishment of a common task.”

“Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something
extraordinary happen” Alan keith.

FOUR FACTORS OF LEADERSHIP

LEADER- You must have an honest understanding of who you are, what you know and what
you can do. To be successful you have yo convinced your followers not your superiors, that
you are worthy to be followed.

FOLLOWER- You must know your people. The fundamental starting point is having a good
understanding of human nature, such as needs, emotions and motivation.

COMMUNICATION- The non-verbal communication is leading , E.g.- when you set

example that communicates to your people that you would not to be willing to do. Bad
communication harm the relation between leader and employee.

SITUATION- We must use our judgement to decide the best course in action and the
leadership style needed for each situation. What we can do in one situation will not always
work in a another.

STYLES OF LEADERSHIP
1. Authoritarian or autocratic
2. Participative or democratic
3. Delegative or Free reign

1. Authoritarian or autocratic
The authoritarian leader makes decision alone as power as centralized in one
person. Decisions are enforced using reward and fear of punishment. It is abusive,
unprofessional style called “bossing around people”.

2. Participative or democratic
The participative leader include one or more employee in the decision making
process. Communication flow freely: suggestions are made both directions. The participation
encourages member commitment to the final decision.

3. Delegative or Free reign

The free reign leader gives power to the subordinates to make the decisions.
However the leader is still responsible for the decision that are made. This is used when the
employees are able to analyze the situation. Deligative style is generally not useful.

OTHER TYPES OF LEADERSHIP

1. Participative Leadership- Decision making is based on group consulation and
information is shared with the group.
2. Achievement oriented leadership- Challenging goals are set and high performance is
encourage while showing confidence in the group ability.

Dr. Rensis Linkert (1903-1981) was a management theorist . According to Likert, the
efficiency of an organization or its departments is influenced by their system of
management.

Likert categories his four management system as follows:

organizational hierarchy .
3. Consultative system
