PRESENTATION

I have carried out this work entitled “BASKETBALL MONOGRAPH” with

great enthusiasm. The ideologization of the work presented below has as its
main objective to expand, deepen and acquire more knowledge about it.
That is why it is important to know about the importance that basketball has
for humanity.

In this work we will develop the concepts that deal with basketball, we will
also learn about its history, the measurements of its court and its main rules;
basketball is a team sport, where two groups of five players each challenge
each other. It basically consists of trying to get a ball into the opposing
team's hoop, preventing the opposing team from getting the ball into their
own team's hoop. The time of this game is divided into two periods of 20
minutes each, with a 10-minute break.

Hoping that you fully enjoy this work, we invite everyone to participate and
visit these wonderful places.

INTRODUCTION

The topic of this work deals with the sport "Basketball", which is played in a team
with a ball that must be introduced into an elevated basket.

While height is an important factor in making a good player, it is by no means a

decisive element. Agility, reflexes, speed, sense of position, control of effort,
serenity - especially in the final moments of the game, when a successful shot at
the basket can be decisive - and precision are qualities that distinguish a
basketball player.

This sport has achieved a very notable development that is evident both in the
field of technique and in that of physical preparation.

Basketball, a team sport, usually played indoors, in which two teams of five
players each attempt to score points (or baskets) by shooting a ball through one of
two baskets suspended above their heads at each end of the court. The team that
scores the most points, by converting field goals or from the free throw area, wins
the game. Due to its dynamism, spectacular nature and the frequency of scoring
actions, it is one of the sports with the greatest number of spectators and
participants in the world.

BASKETBALL

1. CONCEPT:
Popularly known as basketball, it is a sport played between two teams of five
players each, who seek to introduce a ball into the basket defended by the
opposing team, with the objective of getting more points than the opponent,
respecting the rules of the game.

Basketball was born in the United States in 1891, invented by James Naismith,
a physical education teacher at the YMCA Training School in Springfield
(Massachusetts), who was tasked with inventing a sport that could be played
on an indoor court, since the winters in that area made any outdoor activity
difficult.

However, some historians attribute the origin of basketball to the Mayan tribe,
since they practiced a similar sport, tlachtli.

7
During the 20th century, basketball spread throughout the world thanks to the
creation of the International Basketball Federation in 1932, and it has been an
Olympic sport since the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin.

It was during the First World War, with the arrival of American soldiers, who
played this sport a lot, when basketball began to become popular throughout
Europe.

2. HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
Basketball, which probably has its basis in the
German game korbball, was born in December
1891. American from the University of Springfield,
Massachusetts, James A. Naismith is considered
the father and inventor of basketball. This
physical education teacher invented a game that
consisted of passing a ball through a hoop. Team
sport that had its first rules in 1891.

It quickly spread throughout North America and soon became professionalized.

The first intercollegiate game was in 1895 between Yale and Pennsylvania.
The first professional game was played in Trento (New York) in 1893.

In 1898 the first professional league was created. In 1932 the NCAA
championship was born and in 1946 the NBA (under the name Basketball
Association of America). FIBA was founded in 1932.

American soldiers who fought in the First World War exported it to Europe, and
in 1936 it was admitted as an Olympic sport.
In 1950, the first men's basketball World Championships were held in
Argentina, and three years later the first women's championship was held in
Chile. These championships continue to be held every four years, alternating
with the Olympic Games.

8
In 1989, FIBA allowed professionals to participate in the Olympic Games, since
until then only amateur athletes participated. This allowed NBA players to
participate.

3. BASKETBALL RULES
3.1. Duration: Game time is divided into four
periods of 10 minutes each in FIBA basketball,
into four quarters of 12 minutes each in the NBA
and into two 20-minute parts in the NCAA. A
game consists of four quarters, which means
that there are 40 minutes of play plus time-outs,
sidelines and interruptions that may occur during
a game.

3.2. Teams:

a) Players: Only a maximum of 5 players can play per team at a time.

A team must have 5 players to be able to play a match, but, by
elimination due to personal reasons, can continue playing until it only
has one player left. Then the offending team will automatically lose
the match.

b) Substitutes: Up to 7 players listed on the roster may remain on the

bench with the option to play.

c) Coaches: There are usually two coaches on a team: the main coach
(decides who plays and who doesn't play the plays, etc.) and the

9
secondary coach (helps make decisions for the head coach). In the
most economically powerful leagues (ACB, NBA, etc.), the coaching
staff is usually more extensive, with assistants for each aspect of the
game (attack, defense, tactics...)

3.3. Start of the match: One player from each team must stand inside the
centre circle with one foot near
the midfield line, each of them
located in their own field. The
other players must be outside the
circle.

The referee throws the ball

vertically from the centre of the circle and the two players jump
vertically to try to deflect it, without catching it, towards a teammate on
their team.

a) Referees: In most competitions, there are usually two referees in

charge of directing the
match, but in the most
powerful leagues there are
three and in others with
very low budgets or training
leagues there is only one.

b) Scorers' table: the scorers' table (scorer, assistant scorer,

timekeeper, 24-second rule operator and, if necessary,
commissioner) controls all incidents during the match (scoring, time-
outs, playing time, fouls, substitutions, etc.) and draws up the match
report.

10
4. MAIN RULES OF THE GAME
 The ball should be light and controlled with the hands.
 You have to bounce the ball in order to move.
 There should be no personal contact.
 Points are scored by getting the ball into a basket placed horizontally and
elevated.
 There are no restrictions on player possession.

4.1. Violations
a) Steps: After bouncing the ball and catching it again, you cannot take
more than two steps, https://queesela.net/aunque/although you are
not allowed to take two steps and remain still; you must release the
ball immediately. Making “out passes” involves taking a step
immediately, and lifting the pivot foot before beginning to dribble the
ball.

11
b) Doubles: A player cannot bounce the ball with both hands at the
same time. If a player dribbles and stops doing so, he may pass or
shoot but not skip the ball again. He also cannot jump with the ball in
his hands and fall again with the ball held without having passed or
thrown it.

c) Backfield: the attacking team, once it has passed the ball into the
offensive field, may not go back to its own field; during this play, if
any player goes back it will be an infraction called by the referee.

d) Personal foul: when a player comes into contact with an opponent

and causes a disadvantage or the attacker benefits (causing an
advantage). By doing so, you will be penalized with a personal foul.
On the fifth foul (6 in the NBA) the player will be eliminated. This fault
can be in both attack and defense.

e) Unsportsmanlike foul: An unsportsmanlike foul consists of

endangering the physical condition of an opponent. The referee
punishes this action with two free throws for the player who has
received this foul and possession for the attacking team from the
halfway line. A player who has committed two unsportsmanlike fouls
is automatically expelled from the match.

f) Technical foul: a foul committed by a player or a member of the

bench that constitutes inappropriate behavior in a basketball game.
This action is punished with a free throw by the other team and after
this the ball will be played to the offender's opponent's side, but the
coach can choose the free throw taker. Two technical fouls do not
necessarily result in the player who commits them being expelled.
g) Disqualifying foul: personal or technical foul that leads to the
expulsion from the field of play and from the match of the player or
member of the bench who committed it; it is punished in the same
way as a technical foul.

12
h) Feet: The ball cannot touch the feet, creating an advantage for the
attackers or defenders. If it does, possession of the ball passes to
the opposing team.

i) Illegal Defense: A defending player may not remain in the 3-second

zone for more than three seconds without individually defending an
attacker. This infraction is punishable by a free throw (the coach can
choose who takes it) plus possession for the attacking team from
midfield (Rule only applicable to the NBA)

4.2. RELATED DEFINITIONS

a) Pivot: This is the movement in which one foot can move in all
directions, while the other remains still on the ground.

b) Bonus: If a team commits four defensive fouls in a period, from this

point on all defensive personal fouls during this period will be
penalized with two free throws from the free throw line in the
offending team's zone (located 4.60 m from the basket, or 5.30 m in
NBA measurements). Each free throw made is worth one point.

Two free throws shall also be taken whenever a player is fouled while
in the act of shooting and after technical, unsportsmanlike or
disqualifying fouls.

13
When a player is fouled during a play in which he manages to score,
the basket is considered valid and he is awarded an additional free
throw. When a player is fouled while attempting to shoot from the 3-
point area, he will be awarded three free throws.

4.3. OTHER RULES RELATED TO MAXIMUM TIMES

a) Three seconds: An attacking player cannot spend more than three

seconds in the 3-second zone, generating an advantage for himself
or his team (rectangle or trapezoid painted differently from the rest of
the zone), in this case, the ball passes to the opposing team.

b) Five seconds: The player who has to take the throw-in or goal kick
only has five seconds to pass it; if he fails, the ball goes to the
opposing team.

c) Eight seconds: When a team gains possession, it has eight

seconds to pass the ball from the defensive to the offensive field. If
this is not achieved, the ball passes to the opposing team. Twenty-
two-four seconds (or thirty-five seconds in the NCAA): This is the
maximum time that a team can get a shot that touches the rim and/or
introduces the ball into it.

4.4. SCORING SYSTEM

There are three rating systems for encistellaments, which are:
1. Point for baskets made (with time stopped) from the free throw line
(4.60 m. According to FIBA regulations and 5.60 in the NBA)
2. Points if the basket is made during playing time from a distance
inside the 6.75 m line.

3. Points if the basket has been made by throwing from beyond the
6.75 m line.

14
4.5. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PLAYERS IN THEIR DIFFERENT
POSITIONS

Positions in basketball. 1-Point guard, 2-Shooting guard, 3-Point guard,

4-Power forward, 5-Center.

1) Base: Usually the shortest player on the team. He is in charge of

directing the game (ordering the plays in attack and the defensive
positions in defense) and is the extension of the coach on the court.

2) Shooting guard: They are usually taller than the point guard, high-
scoring players or great defenders who are the main target of many
of the team's plays.

3) Small forwards: Key positionhttps://queesela.net/clave/ in modern

basketball. They are the most versatile players on the team and must
master almost every aspect of the game.

15
4) Power Forward: Interior players who are stronger than the small
forwards and a little shorter than the centers. They can usually play
outside.

5) Pivots: They are the tallest players on a team. They are in charge of
catching rebounds and ensuring that the opposing team does not
enter the shooting line.

5. THE COURT, THE BASKET AND THE BASKETBALL BALL

5.1. THE PLAYING COURT.

A basketball court is a rectangle with a hard, smooth surface free of
obstacles, which is between 12.8 and 15.2 meters wide, and between
22.5 and 28.6 meters long.

The perimeter of the track must have a margin of two meters free of
obstacles.

The distance of the first obstacle on the track must be at least 7 meters.

The playing field is divided into two equal halves, separated by a parallel
line equidistant from the goal lines, called the half-field line.

16
In the centre of the halfway line is the centre circle, which measures 3.6
metres in diameter.

For each team, the half containing the basket being defended is called
the defensive half court, and the half of the court containing the basket
being scored is called the offensive half court.

The baskets are located on the baselines, at a height of 3.05 metres and
extend 1.20 metres above the playing field.

Parallel to the baseline is the free throw line, which is located 5.80 m
from the baseline and 4.60 m from the basket. The circle where the free
throw line is located has a diameter of 3.6 meters. The lines measure 6
cm. Wide.

The three-point line is located 6.75 m from the basket (except in the
NBA, where it is located 7.24 m).

17
5.2. THE BASKETBALL BALL
The basketball must obviously be spherical, made of leather or rough
skin, or synthetic material, which makes it easier for players to pick it up
with sweaty hands. Traditionally it is https://queesela.net/color/orange,
with black lines, but there are many variants. Indoor and outdoor balls
differ in the material they are covered with.

Since the 2004-05 season, FIBA has adopted a ball with light yellow
bands on the classic orange background colour for its competitions, to
improve the visibility of the ball for both players and the public.

Since 2007, a ball with black stripes has been used in Spain, but its
durability is being debated because it is too slippery.

Circumference: 68 – 73 cm
Diameter: 23-24 cm
Weight: 567-629 g

5.3. Basketball hoop

Three different sizes are used, corresponding to three sizes and weights
depending on the categories: number "7", used for men's basketball, "6"
for women's basketball, and "5" for mini-basketball and Pre-K (generally
children from 8 to 12 years old).

The basket backboard is 1.05 metres high and 1.80 m wide. wide. In the
lower central part, there is a rectangle measuring 0.59 m wide and 0.45
m high, which is raised from the backboard by 0.15 m at the bottom.
Inside the rectangle is the basket support, which measures 0.45 m wide.
The basket circle should have a diameter of 45.7 cm.

18
CONCLUSIONS

This sport is an instrument that serves as a gateway to another world, another

meaning of things; for example, for a basketball player the most important thing
in his life would be to make the winning basket in a game, while for us it is
something unimportant.

It is also a means to unite people, races, religions, societies, etc., since we

unite for the same cause, so to speak, to enjoy a basketball game, regardless
of anything else.

Today this is one of the most popular and most played sports in the world. It is
practiced in an organized manner in more than one hundred countries; in many
of them it has equaled and even surpassed football and baseball in popularity.
This sport has become so popular that fans cheer on the players. The players
we can mention for their commitment and popularity are: Michael Jordan,
Shaquille O'Neal, Larry Jonson, among others.
