Assignment

1. Determine the x and y components of each of the forces in the figures below.
a)

b)

2. A telephone cable is clamped at A to the pole AB. Knowing that the tension in the left-
hand portion of the cable is T1 = 800 N, determine by trigonometry (a) the required
tension T2 in the right-hand portion if the resultant R of the forces exerted by the cable
at A is to be vertical, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R.
3. Cable AC is 70 m long, and the tension in that cable is 5250 N. Determine (a) the x, y,
and z components of the force exerted by the cable on the anchor C, (b) the angles θ x,
θy, and θz defining the direction of that force.

4. Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown.

a) Determine the tension in cables AC and BC.

b) Knowing that P = 360 N, determine the tension in cables AC and BC.

5. A T-shaped bracket supports the four loads shown. Determine the reactions at A and B
(a) if a 10 in., (b) if a 7 in.

6. The bracket BCD is hinged at C and attached to a control cable at B. For the loading
shown, determine (a) the tension in the cable, (b) the reaction at C.

7. The maximum allowable value of each of the reactions is 180 N. Neglecting the
weight of the beam, determine the range of the distance d for which the beam is safe.

8. The lever BCD is hinged at C and attached to a control rod at B. Determine the
maximum force P that can be safely applied at D if the maximum allowable value of
the reaction at C is 250 N.
