GOAL Determine the inverse of one-to-one functions using “Heuristics”
ROLE Mathematician/Math Investigator

You are to discover and prove a different method of determining the
inverse of a function, specifically using heuristics. A heuristic is a
mental shortcut that allows people to solve problems and make
judgments quickly and efficiently. It comes from the Greek word,
“heuriskein” which means to discover, find out, invent, get or gain. One
of the founders of heuristics is the Hungarian mathematician George
Polya, who published a book about the subject in 1945 called, “How to
Solve It”.

In this new method of finding the inverse of a function, we consider the


inverse of the operations, as follows:

Addition is the inverse of subtraction and vice versa


Multiplication is the inverse of Division and vice versa
The inverse of a reciprocal is the reciprocal itself
An nth Root is the inverse to the nth power

For example, find the inverse of the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 3.

Note that the sequence of performing the inverse operations is also


reversed in order. Addition by 3 (inverse of Subtraction by 3) comes
first then followed by the inverse operation of the first (Multiplication
by 2), which is division by 2.

For rational functions, the concept of reciprocal as the inverse of a


reciprocal is introduced.
