2. Introduction
Three-phase induction motors are a type of alternating current motor, where they convert
electrical energy into mechanical energy. In the process of installing a starting circuit in three-
4
phase motors, the characteristics of the motor plate are taken into account, and it is also carried
out in accordance with the provisions of NTC 2050 in section 430, which sets out the elements
The purpose of this report is to analyze the proper installation process of a three-phase
induction motor, under the mathematical models agreed upon in the Colombian technical
standard 2050. When selecting the installation elements, it is necessary to take into account
different variables such as nominal current, conductor selection, selection device, among others.
In the development of this report, we will focus on a three-phase induction motor for
refrigeration systems of air conditioning plants in naval units, since its operation is continuous
service, which is of vital importance for the work carried out by these types of motors.
Illustration 1 is the selection of the three-phase electric motor, such plate contains the
characteristics necessary for the development of the calculations. The corresponding data for
According to the provisions of NTC 2050 in its article 430-6ª, it is established that table
430-150 (Table 2) is used to estimate the nominal current.

A voltage of 220 V is taken according to the data on the plate, but such voltage is not
found exactly in table 430-150, so the values are interpolated (Table 3).

With the power supplied (3 HP) by the plate, said characteristic was located in Table 2.
From this, the motor power equivalent to 2.238 KW was obtained. Regarding the nominal
amperage, the result was 10.05 A at full load. It can be seen that the higher the voltage, the lower
In the calculations of conductors, switches, short circuit protection, the nominal current
will be used.
For conductors that supply a single motor, they must have a capacity greater than or equal
to 125% (≥125%) of the motor's capacity at full load. This capacity will be taken into
account for the calculation of the conductor with a nominal amperage at full load of 10.05
A.
Conductor =Amperaje∗125 %
Equation 1. Driver
The conductor must support a minimum of 12.56 A, since if a lower amperage conductor
is used, it may tend to have insulation problems, overheat and melt.

Taken from Table B-310-3, NTC 2050
The maximum temperature from Table 4 is selected due to the high temperatures in the engine
rooms of naval units, so the copper conductor was taken at the nominal temperature of 90 °C,
which is equivalent to 32A with 12AWG gauge.

Disconnecting devices for motor circuits rated 600V or less shall have a current rating of
at least 115% of the full-load current rating of the motor. According to the conditions and
exceptions of a sectioning device we can determine that none of them apply to this motor,

This element is intended to protect circuit conductors, motor controllers and the motors
themselves from countercurrent due to short circuits or ground faults. For the
development of the respective calculation, the data from Table 430-152 of NTC 2050

The nominal amperage at full load (10.05 A) was taken by the value of the non-time-delay fuse
equivalent to 300%.

MODEL: SDD63C32
The switching device is normally used to start and stop a motor, the nominal power in W
(HP) at the motor voltage must be taken into account, equal to or greater than the nominal
power of the motor.
Continuous duty motors greater than 1 HP (746 W) must be protected against overload.
This device must be calibrated to trip at the following percentages of the nominal current
taken from the motor's nameplate.
