Introduction to
ECSCADA
BASIC SCADA SYSTEM
WHAT IS SCADA

➢ SCADA is an acronym that stands for

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition.

➢ SCADA refers to a system that collects

data from various sensors at a factory,
plant or in other remote locations and then
sends this data to a central computer
which then manages and controls the data
SCADA applications
SCADA finds applications in small to very large industrial
applications. They include

• Pipelines for Oil, Gas, Water etc.

• Off shore and on shore Oil drilling and production facilities
• Nuclear Applications
• Cement, Steel, Fertilizer and other process plants
• Power plants and electrical sub stations
• Electrical traction
• Power transmission and distribution
SCADA system components

➢ FieldInstruments
➢ IED devices/RTU/PLC
➢ SCADA servers with SCADA software
➢ MMI/HMI Clients for operator interface
➢ Remote Work Stations
➢ Web server for serving web clients
➢ OPC/HISTORIAN Servers
➢ Networking Equipment
SCADA system components

➢ Field Instruments for sensing, collecting,

sending the field value
➢ RTU/PLC for collecting values from field
instruments, processing, sending to
SCADA, energizing the outputs.
➢ SCADA Servers will collect data from
PLC/RTU and send to MMI for display
SCADA server software
➢ Operating system based on Unix/Windows/Linux/Open
VMS
➢ RDBMS Software Oracle/Sybase/SQL server/Mysql
➢ Language compilers like c, c++
➢ SCADA software [ECSCADA, wonderware, ifix, citect]

SCADA client software

➢ Windows/Linux Operating system
➢ Client component of RDBMS
➢ VC++/VB/.Net compilers /libraries
➢ Client component of SCADA system
Networking
➢ LAN switches for connectivity between
servers and different nodes.
➢ WAN routers for communicating with
remote locations.
➢ Terminal servers for communicating with
serial devices.

Data flow from Field to SCADA
1. Sensors and instruments
converts physical quantity to
electrical signal
2. This ES received by AI/DI
card (4-20 mA or 5 V) will be
processed in PLC/RTU
3. PLC/RTU sends this data to
SCADA Servers using some
standard protocol via
serial/TCP
4. SCADA will display the data
after scaling the value.
5. SCADA will display the data
in the form of Mimics,
tabular, graph, reports etc.
6. User can drive the AO/DO
commands to PLC from
SCADA MMI.(MMI->PLC-
>PLC DO/AO->Field Inst.
Brief History of SCADA, CnID
