A Review of Book “Shirish Ko Phool”
Original Title: Shirish Ko Phool
Author: Parijat
Pages: 65
Publisher: Shajha Prakashan
Genre: Novel
Language: Nepali
Year of publication: 1964
Awards: Madan Puraskar
‘Shirish Ko Phool’, written by Bishnu Kumari Waiba known popularly with her pseudonym Parijat, was
published by Shajha Prakashan officially for the first time in 1964. The novel does not have any political ground
and is not influenced by politics. Although the book is only 65 pages long, it is capable of leaving a powerful
impact on readers.
Shirish Ko Phool revolves around the life of Suyog Bir Singh, a Veteran solider. Living an unremarkable and
uncelebrated life in vacuum (sunya), he has no one to call his family and friends. Therefore, he tries to forget his
bitterness or sadness by taking alcohol. He often goes to a bar for drinking where he finds a younger drinking
partner Shivaraj who takes Suyog to his home where he meets Shakambari, a women sixteen years younger than
him. She is the daughter of Shivaraj. He doesn’t believe women to be outspoken and thinks that they are
household materials, but Shakambari is like one he thinks. She is quite attractive and gradually he becomes
crazy about her.
In the book, Shakambari is presented as the Shirish, a flower that blooms giving warmth to the cold world.
Overpowered by the love for Shakambari, Suyog also feels a sense of self hatred. His consciousness is shaken
to its core by his feeling of love and life being painful. Shakambari, just like a flower, gives up and withers
down to the Earth. At the end phase of the novel, Suyog is left guilty as he finally realizes that his mistakes can
ruin lives in a way, he never even thought it would. Shakambari’s death flashes a truth in front of Suyog’s eyes.
The book does not only tell the story of victory but of an empty and meaning less life and a toxic love for a
woman. Shakambari is presented as a strong, independent and spiteful women with atheistic attitudes who
resents looking weak in front of her male counter parts. While Suyog is a lowly mortal who sees Shakambari to
be stronger than him. Although the book is intensely lyrical, its language is clearly understandable.
This novel tries to show how any experience can affect a person’s life, his way of thinking and his perception on
things. Novel also shows, how typical a Nepali man perceives a woman to be, and their feeling about their wife.
In this novel the feelings of a lonely person are shown very accurately.
Its ending is dissatisfactory as I still had lots of expectations, many questions that still remained unanswered but
overall, the feel that the story tries to present is great. As it was written in the mid-development phase of Nepali
literature (madhyamik kaal/shringar kaal) it has the talk of love and physical attraction in it.
Shirish Ko Phool, an award receiving book is a must read. It has got Madan puraskar, a prestigious award for
novels and literary figures. It has also been translated to English as ‘The Blue Mimosa’ and is also included in
some of the university courses.
Don’t miss it!
