THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM
Video Quiz

Directions: At the end of the video production is a short quiz. You may write the answers to the
quiz on this sheet.

1. What are the four organs of the excretory system?

The four organs of the excretory system are: kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.

2. Why is the excretory system important to the human body?

It eliminates waste products such as: urea, uric acid ammonia, and other chemical products via
urine.

3. How do kidneys clean the blood?

The blood is cleaned by passing through millions of tiny blood filters.

4. How is perspiration important to regulating body temperature?

When perspiration evaporates from your skin, it cools both your skin and the tissues underneath.

5. What are the names of the two main layers of the skin?

The names of the two main layers of the skin are a superficial epidermis and a deeper dermis

6. What is urine?
Urine is a liquid or semisolid solution of metabolic wastes.

7. What job does the bladder perform?

The bladder acts like a temporary reservoir until the urine is released from the body.

8. What does the term homeostasis mean?

Homeostasis means a state of balance among all the body systems needed for the body to survive
and function correctly.
9. What role do the lungs have in the excretory system?
The lungs' role in the excretory system is responsible for the excretion of gaseous wastes.

10. How big are the kidneys and where are they located?
The size of the kidney is about the size of a fist. They are located just below the rib cage, one on
each side of your spine.

Vocabulary

Directions: Write a definition for each of the terms listed below:

1. metabolism -the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.

2. excretory system -a vital biological system that removes excess and waste products from the body to
maintain homeostasis.

3. alveoli -any of the many tiny air sacs of the lungs which allow for rapid gaseous exchange.

4. capillaries -delicate blood vessels that exist throughout your body.

5. kidneys -remove waste products from the blood and produce urine.

6. homeostasis -state of balance among all the body systems needed for the body to survive
and function correctly.

7. nephron -one of the functional units of the kidney that filters the blood.

8.urine -The fluid produced by the kidneys , consisting of water and dissolved substances, is stored
in the bladder and discharged through the urethra.

9. ureter -The tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder.

10. bladder -a hollow, stretchy organ in the lower part of your abdomen that stores urine before it
leaves your body through your urethra.

11. urethra -the duct by which urine is conveyed out of the body from the bladder, and which in male
vertebrates also conveys semen.

12. liver -a large very vascular glandular organ of vertebrates that secretes bile and causes
important changes in many of the substances contained in the blood.

13. epidermis -the thin outer layer of the skin.

14. dermis -The inner layer of the two main layers of the skin.

scopic nephrons. Filtering of the blood takes place within
these areas. Each nephron contains a cluster of

As the blood continues through the blood vessels, it winds
renal tubula
around the _____ _____. During this time, reabsorption
occurs. Glucose and chemicals, such as potassium, so-
dium, hydrogen, magnesium and calcium, are reabsorbed

filtration returns to the blood during the reabsorption phase.
The kidneys control the amount of liquid in our bodies.

THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM
Quiz

Directions: Use the space provided to answer the following questions. Use the back of this sheet if
necessary.

1. What is the function of the excretory system?

The excretory system's function is to remove excess and waste products from the body to maintain homeostasis.

2. Name the four organs of the excretory system.

The four organs of the excretory system are the kidney, ureter, urethra, and urinary bladder.

3. Why must metabolic wastes be eliminated from the body?

They can build up, poison, and eventually kill the cells.

4. What job do the lungs perform in eliminating wastes from the body?
The lungs help eliminate the gas from your body.

5. How do the kidneys filter the blood?

As blood passes through the nephron, fluid and waste products are filtered out.

6. What role does the liver play in defending our bodies from poisonous substances?
The liver plays an important role in protecting the organism from potentially toxic
chemical insults through its capacity to convert lipophiles into more water-soluble
metabolites which can be efficiently eliminated from the body via the urine.
7. One thing that perspiration does is cool the body. How does it do that?
Its main function is to control body temperature. As the water in the sweat evaporates, the
surface of the skin cools.

8. What does perspiration contain?

Sweat is mainly water, but it also contains some salts.

9. What is urea?
A waste product made when your liver breaks down protein.

10. What role does the bladder have in the functioning of the excretory system?
The role that the bladder has is the bladder's walls relax and expand to store urine, and contract
and flatten to empty urine through the urethra.
