TOPIC 1 : ENGINEERING PROFESSION

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING IN MALAYSIA


Learning outcomes:
(a) Define engineering.
(b) State the importance of engineering in daily life.
(c) Discuss the engineering professional agencies or/and bodies in Malaysia.

Questions:

1. State the definition of engineering.

2. Explain who are engineers and what they do?

3. “Without engineers, science is just philosophy”. Describe with example 5


importance of engineering in our daily life.

4. The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is a statutory body constituted under the
Registration of Engineers Act 1967 or usually known as ACT 138.
i. What is the primary role of BEM?
ii. Describe other function of BEM

5. The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) was established in 1959.


i. What is the primary role of IEM?
ii. Describe other function of BEM

6. State the comparison between BEM and IEM.

7. Name SIX other engineering professional agencies and explain the functions of
each body.

1.2 TYPES OF ENGINEERING

Learning outcomes:

(a) Explain the role and job functions between engineers, engineering technologists, and
scientists.
(b) Explain the engineering disciplines and sub-disciplines: mechanical, chemical, civil, and
electrical & electronic engineering.

Questions:

1. Discuss the differences between engineering, science and technology.

2. Discuss the differences between engineers, technologists and scientists in terms of


role and job function.

3. State TWO (2) competencies required for an engineer and a engineering


technologist.

4. Normally engineers work in a group that comprises of many other personals from
different backgrounds. The project will be supervised by authorized board to ensure
the success of project according to the required procedures and specification.
(a) Explain the role and job function of each technology team below:
i) Scientist
ii) Engineer
iii) Engineering technologist
iv) Technician
v) Skill worker

(b) Explain why the engineer in the technology team stated in question 3(a)
importance in the project carry out.

5. Explain FOUR (4) main disciplines of engineering.

6. Explain FOUR (4) sub-disciplines of each core engineering as stated in Question 5.

7. Mumtaz just graduated in Electronics Engineering bachelor degree with first class
honours. He is thinking of pursuing his career in engineering field. Identify THREE
(3) most suitable engineering job prospects in the relevent industry sector based on
his qualification as a fresh graduate. Briefly define each of the prospects with
suitable example.

1.3 ENGINEERING EDUCATION

Learning outcomes 1.3:


a) Describe the types of accredited engineering and engineering technology
programmes in Malaysia:
i. Bachelor of Engineering (BEng);
ii. Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEng Tech).

b) Distinguish the various prospects of engineers:


i. practicing engineer;
ii. engineering consultant;
iii. engineering contractor;
iv. lecturers/ teachers; and
v. researcher

Questions:

1. There are TWO (2) types of engineering and engineering technology programmes in
Malaysia offered by Malaysia universities. Explain each of the programmes.

2. Discuss the differences between engineering and engineering technology.

3. Explain FIVE (5) prospects in engineering disciplines.

4. Describe the suitable prospect of engineers who work at Consulting firm, contracting
company, teaching field and researching area. State the differences of the scope of
work for each prospects.

5. Amzar has graduated from a local university with a Bachelor of Electronic/Electrical


Engineering, and registered as a graduate member with the Board of Engineer
Malaysia. He has been working as a research engineer for three years in a
telecommunication company and is currently looking for another job prospect related
in his field. List FOUR (4) other possible job prospects in engineering that Amzar may
apply based on his degree or his experience. Describe briefly the scope of work for
each prospect.

6. Ezmiraz graduated from a well-known university in Japan in the field of automotive


engineering in January 2023. He is still unemployed and considering for a job
employment. As his best friend, you would like to assist him by explaining various job
opportunities available for Ezmiraz. For that purpose, briefly explain FIVE (5) job
prospects in the field of automotive engineering in Malaysia.

1.4 ROUTE TO PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER (PE)

Learning outcomes:

(a) Describe the importance of registration as graduate engineers with BEM.


(b) Describe the requirement and procedure to register as graduate engineer.
(c) Discuss the benefits and responsibilities of a Professional Engineer.
(d) Describe the requirement and procedure to register as PE with BEM.

Questions:

1. Who is a Graduate Engineer?

2. With suitable diagram, describe the requirement and procedures to register as


graduate engineer with BEM.

3. Explain the importance of registering with BEM as a graduate engineer before


starting engineering work.

4. Who is a Professional Engineer?

5. With suitable diagram, describe the requirement and procedures to register as


Professional Engineer with BEM.

6. State FIVE (5) characteristics of a Professional Engineer.

7. State the benefits to be a Professional Engineer.

8. State the responsibility of a Professional Engineer.

9. Ziqqri is a student from an accredited engineering programme, who is due to


graduate soon. He has been offered to work with an engineering company with the
prospect of becoming a professional engineer later in his career.

(i) What is the first step should Ziqqri be taken once he graduated to enable
him to practice as an engineer?

(ii) After gaining vast experiences in engineering profession, he plans to


become a professional engineer. What are requirements that Ziqqri
should have to register as a professional engineer?
