Resistances in Series, Parallel, and Series-Parallel
Resistances in Series, Parallel, and Series-Parallel
Objectives:
• To analyze mathematical relationships between quantities for series circuits.
• To analyze mathematical relationships between quantities for parallel circuits.
• To differentiate series and parallel circuits.
Materials:
• 5 Different Resistors (hundred ohms range)
• 5 V Power Supply (e.g. charger for old cell phones)
• Connecting Wires
• Breadboard
• Multimeter
• MultiSim or any Circuit Simulator
Procedures:
A. Actual Experiment:
1. Measure the resistance of each resistor using an ohmmeter.
2. Build the circuits shown below.
3. Measure the voltages and currents across each resistor using a multimeter. Document this
step via pictures of each measurement.
B. Simulation/Manual Calculations:
1. In a circuit simulator, build the same circuits shown above using the actual/measured
resistance values.
2. Attach voltmeters and ammeters to the circuit to measure the potential difference and
currents across each resistor. Screenshot your output for this step.
3. Manually solve for the voltages and currents across each resistor.
4. Compare it with the ones you measured from the simulation, and the actual experiment.
C. Design:
1. Build your own series-parallel circuit using all the resistors listed in the materials above.
2. Simulate this circuit to measure the voltages and currents across each resistor.
3. Compare these values with those from your manual calculations.
4. Verify these values by building the actual circuit.

4. How does the current in each resistor (I1 , I2 , I3 ) compare to one another and to the current
in the battery (IB)?
5. How does the electric potential difference across the battery (∆VB) compare to the summative
electric potential differences of the three resistors (∆V1 , ∆V2 , ∆V3 )?
6. Write the above relationship as an equation.
7. Calculate the ratio of electric potential difference to current for the battery (∆VB/IB ).
8. How does this ratio compare to the resistance values of the resistor? Attempt to write an
equation relating the ∆VB /IB ratio to R1, R2, and R3 values.
