1.2 Notes Key - Graph Abs Val Functions_Inequalities

The document outlines the transformations of absolute value functions, detailing vertical and horizontal transformations based on the parameters a, b, h, and k. It provides a step-by-step guide for graphing these functions, including creating a parent table and adjusting values accordingly. Additionally, it mentions the need to state transformations, domain, range, and minimum or maximum values for the graph.

2 Notes - Graphing Absolute Value Functions

Each variable causes a certain transformation to occur.

Vertical Transformation Horizontal Transformations

-a: vertical reflection -b: horizontal reflection

|a| > 1: vertical stretch |b| > 1: horizontal compression
0 < |a| < 1: vertical compression 0 < |b| < 1: horizontal stretch
+ k: up (x+ h): left
- k: down (x - h): right

Steps to Graphing:

1. Write the parent table

2. Multiply the y-values by the “a”
3. Multiply the x-values by the reciprocal of “b”
4. Graph using the new table values
5. Move the graph according to “h” and “k”

1
Graph. State the transformations, the domain and range in interval notation,
and the minimum or maximum value.

2
3
Write an equation/inequality for the graph. Use y=a|b(x −h)|+k (Assume that b = 1).
