Doc: for the motion

Economic : AI is causing widespread job losses, especially for low- and

medium-skilled workers, as it replaces roles in industries like transportation,
manufacturing, and even professional fields like law. While it may create some
new jobs, millions will be displaced, leading to increased inequality and social
instability.

Against AI :
Statistics 2023 McKinsey report estimates that up to 375 million workers (14%
of the global workforce) will need to switch occupations due to automation by
2030.

While studies show that millions of jobs will be displaced by automation by

2025,

(AI) is also poised to create 97 million new jobs.

This was shared at the Knowledge Summit on Monday (November18) by Latifa

Alshehhi, Director of Investment Data Department, Ministry of Investment in the
UAE.

In advanced economies, about 60 percent of jobs may be impacted by AI.
Roughly half the exposed jobs may benefit from AI integration, enhancing
productivity. For the other half, AI applications may execute key tasks currently
performed by humans, which could lower labor demand, leading to lower
wages and reduced hiring. In the most extreme cases, some of these jobs may
disappear.

Question: How do you plan to address the economic disparity created by
widespread job automation, particularly for workers in industries that cannot
adapt to AI?

The Industrial Revolution serves as a cautionary example of how technological

progress can disrupt societies. While it eventually led to economic growth, it
also caused widespread job displacement, poor working conditions, and social
unrest during its early stages. Similarly, AI is now replacing jobs across
industries at an even faster pace, but the transition period may be more
damaging, as modern economies are far more interconnected. Without
proactive measures, AI could replicate the Industrial Revolution's upheaval on a
much larger and more immediate scale.

Educational:

AI could worsen educational inequality by creating a divide between those who

have access to advanced AI tools and those who do not. Wealthier schools
and students will benefit from AI-driven learning platforms, while
underfunded schools may struggle to integrate these technologies.
Additionally, over-reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT can hinder critical thinking
and problem-solving skills, as students may become passive consumers rather
than active learners.

Statistics:
A 2023 UNESCO report found that only 20% of schools in low-income
countries have access to the infrastructure needed for AI-enhanced education,

compared to over 80% in high-income countries

Question:
How can you ensure that AI in education reduces inequality instead of widening
the gap between privileged and underprivileged students?

Contr_aatack:

AI tools are helpful, but relying on them too much takes away the chance to
truly learn and think for yourself. Education is about building skills and
understanding, which you can’t do if you let AI do all the work. By using AI as a
tool, not a crutch, students can still learn and grow while getting some help
when needed.

Study :

A study by MIT found that facial recognition systems have an error rate of
34.7% for dark-skinned women, compared to less than 1% for light-skinned
men.

MIT media lab 27 Nov 2023

Computer scientist Joy Buolamwini was a graduate student at MIT when she
made a startling discovery: The facial recognition software program she was
working on couldn't detect her dark skin; it only registered her presence when
she put on a white mask.

AI systems are susceptible to biases that can perpetuate and even exacerbate
societal inequalities. Algorithms trained on biased data have shown
discriminatory behavior in hiring, law enforcement, and lending practices,
leading to unequal outcomes.

We can not denny the fact that it s people s fault and not Ai but still Ai in this
case is supporting the bad people in an other words those kind of people can t

4. privacy

Enhanced safety shouldn’t come at the cost of fundamental rights. History

shows that surveillance tools often get misused, leading to oppression rather
than safety. How do you prevent governments or corporations from exploiting
this power?

Consent is often manipulated or given under duress, such as in authoritarian
regimes. Comparing it to social media ignores the fact that people can opt out
of social platforms but cannot avoid government surveillance.

If the AI itself is biased or flawed, its decisions can lead to systemic abuse.
How can we trust these systems if even developers cannot fully understand or
control them?

Uncontrollable AI Systems :

AI systems are becoming so complex that even their developers struggle to

understand or control them fully. This lack of transparency can lead to
unintended consequences, including catastrophic failures in critical systems
like finance, healthcare, or transportation.

OpenAI's GPT models have shown instances of generating harmful

misinformation despite extensive safeguards, raising questions about their
reliability in high-stakes applications.

How do you propose to ensure accountability for AI systems when even

developers cannot always predict their behavior?

Contradiction to uncontrollable AI systems:

International organization dealing with AI :

In the new issue note, UNEP recommends five
main things. Firstly, countries can establish
standardized procedures for measuring the

Fourthly, countries can encourage companies
to green their data centres, including by using
renewable energy and offsetting their carbon
emissions. Finally, countries can weave their Al- related policies into their
broader environmental regulations.

Energy Efficiency and Innovation:

While AI systems can be energy-intensive, leading companies like Google are

developing energy-efficient hardware and practices. For example, their sixth-
generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) is over 67% more energy-efficient
than previous models, and they have reduced emissions from training AI
models by up to 1,000 times through innovative

contributes to environmental sustainability, such as reducing global greenhouse
gas emissions by optimizing energy use and transportation. For instance,
Google's AI-driven flood forecasting helps mitigate natural disasters, and AI
tools for traffic optimization have reduced emissions by millions of metric tons .

The environmental challenges of AI are largely due to the broader energy

demands of data centers, not AI alone. Studies indicate that the right regulatory
frameworks and collaborative efforts could reduce these impacts while
leveraging AI to accelerate solutions for climate change .

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

But when it comes to the environment, there is a negative side to the explosion
of AI and its associated infrastructure, according to a growing body of
research. The proliferating data centres that house AI servers produce
electronic waste. They are large consumers of water, which is becoming scarce
in many places. They rely on critical minerals and rare elements, which are
often mined unsustainably. And they use massive amounts of electricity,
spurring the emission of planet-warming greenhouse gases.
