A list of the books will be given to the students for reading.
A list of the books will be given to the students for reading.
Longman Grammar of spoken and written English by Randolph Quirk 7th impression 2007
Focus on grammar book 4 and 5 by Lida Baker 2006
English Grammar in Use by Raymond
Please remember to bring your textbooks and a notebook to each class!

EXPECTED STUDENT BEHAVIOR

Language use in class: English Only!
You already know your first language; this is time to use English. After the teacher explains this syllabus
to you, your class will be carried out entirely in English, and you are expected to speak only English as
well. The only exception to this will be any descriptions of class policies.

ATTENDANCE
You may have 3 absences (for sickness, etc.) without direct penalty to your grade.
Each absence after the third will reduce your final grade by 1%. In the event that you do miss class, you
are responsible for keeping up with all work that you miss. Speak to your Instructor if you have an
attendance problem. If you miss class for sickness or other reason, you will need to discuss with your
teacher whether or not you can make up a missed exam or class work.

POLICY ON LATE ARRIVALS

In order to acquire English, exposure to and practice with the language during class time is very
important. It is a distraction to everyone when students enter the classroom late. Arriving late will affect
your attendance record as follows: 2 late arrivals = 1 absence. These absences will reduce your final
grade. Please do whatever is necessary to be in class on time ready to begin working every day.
Excessive lateness will cause you to fail this class.

HOMEWORK POLICY
You are expected to finish all assigned homework before coming to class the next day. This is essential as
if you do not complete your homework, you will not be prepared to participate fully in class. If you miss
class, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to make up any missed homework or class
work. Of course, homework assignments that you turn in must be your own work, not the work of a
family member or a friend.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CLASS WORK AND GRADES

Remember that you are responsible for doing all of the work for the class, even on days you miss. If you
must be absent on the day of a test / quiz, please try to tell your instructor in advance to discuss the
possibility of a taking a make-up test. It is up to the instructor’s discretion as to whether or not you will be
able to make up a missed test. If you miss a test, you may receive a zero on that test.

PARTICIPATION
English is best acquired when you actively participate in the lesson, so participation points are offered as
an incentive to work hard in the classroom. Please interact in the class and be supportive, encouraging,
and respectful to your classmates who do the same.

CELL PHONES
All cell phones must be off during class. Failure to keep a phone off may result in your being asked to
leave class for the day, which will be counted as an absence.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
In order to pass this course, you must (1) obtain an overall total score of 75% or higher in the categories
listed below. The relative weight of each category is shown at the right, and (2) pass the Final Exam for
this class with 75% or higher.

Mid-term Exam: 20%

Homework: 10%
Attendance: 10%
Final Exam: 60%
Total 100%

ASSESSMENT RUBRICS
Assessment rubrics are key elements of the English program. Periodically throughout the term, you will
be given rubrics describing the specific learning goals you are working on and what you need to do to
master these goals. These rubrics will help you to clearly understand what you are striving for and allow
you to monitor your progress. Your instructor will use these rubrics as he is assessing your progress and
competencies in a particular area.

PRESENTATIONS
You will be required to complete at least one presentation. You will be graded on fluency, content,
presentation style/interest, and how well you use and apply the vocabulary and structures learned in class.
Evaluation checklists will be provided.

POLICY ON PLAGIARISM
All work that you submit in the course is to be your own work. If you use or are using information from
books or articles, including articles posted on web pages, for your presentations, you are expected to
include the name of the author, the title of the work, the year of publication and the publisher.
If you submit as your own work, homework, presentations or exam answers that were developed by
another student, by a friend or family member or by a published author, you will fail the class. If there is
a second incident of plagiarism, it will be reported to the Head of the English Department who may
dismiss you from the program.
