Tutorial sheet-8

The document is a tutorial sheet for a course on Optimization Techniques at Thapar University, containing six problems related to project management and network analysis. Each problem involves constructing project networks, identifying critical paths, calculating completion times, and determining float times for activities. The problems also include scenarios for budget preparation and project scheduling with various activities and their durations.

Tutorial Sheet # 8
1. A network is given as (1-2, 5), (1-4, 1), (1-5, 5), (2-3, 9), (2-5, 8), (2-6, 10), (3-4, 3), (3-6, 4), (4-6, 5), (4-7, 4), (5-6,
7), (5-7, 3), (6-7, 3). Find the critical activities and the critical path.

2. A company is in the process of preparing budget for launching a new project. The following table provides with
associated activities and their durations. Construct the project network and determine the projection completion
time and critical path. Also find the free and total float times of non-critical activities.
Activity Predecessor Duration (days)
A: Forecast and volume - 10
B: Study Competitive Market - 07
C: Design Item and facilities A 05
D: Prepare Production Schedule C 03
E: Estimate Cost of Production D 02
F: Set Sales Price B, E 01
G: Prepare Budget E, F 14

3. A project is described by the following activities. (Activity; Predecessor(s); Activity time (weeks)): (A; -; 4), (B; C;
5), (C; -; 2), (D; A; 9), (E; A; 7), (F; A; 6), (G; B; 5), (H; -; 2), (I; G, J,K; 4), (J; H,E; 3), (K; H; 5), (L; H; 6).Draw
the network diagram. Find the critical activities, the overall project completion time and the free & total float times
associated with each activity. Explain with reasons the effect upon the overall project completion time if the
completion time for activity F is increased by 6 weeks.

4. Consider the project with the following data on precedence relationships, durations and costs.
Activity A B C D E F G
Immediate Predecessor -- -- A A B, C D, E E
Time (Days) 6 4 3 4 7 5 10
Find the project completion time, critical path and float times for non-critical activities.

5. An architect has been awarded a contract to prepare plans for an urban renewal project. The job consists of the
following activities and their estimated times

Activity Description Immediate Predecessors Time (days)

A Prepare preliminary sketches --- 2
B Outline specifications --- 1
C Prepare drawings A 3
D Write specifications A, B 2
E Run off prints C, D 1
F Have specification B, D 3
G Assemble bid packages E, F 1
(a) Draw an arrow diagram for this project
(b) Indicate the critical path, and calculate the total float and free float for each activity.

6. A small project consists of the following activities where duration is in days and cost is in rupees

Activity Precedence Normal Normal cost Crash Crash

duration duration duration
A - 6 300 5 400
B - 8 400 6 600
C A 7 400 5 600
D B 11 1000 4 1350
E C 8 500 5 800
F B 7 400 6 500
G D, E 5 1000 3 1400
H F 8 500 5 950
Given that indirect cost is Rs. 160/- per day.
(a) Draw the network and find the normal duration.
(b) Find the most economical schedule if the project is to be completed in 21 days
(c) Find the minimum project duration and total cost involved
