Tutorial sheet-4

The document is a tutorial sheet for MA102: Engineering Mathematics-II, detailing various problems related to linear independence, vector spaces, and dimensions of subspaces. It includes tasks such as checking the linear independence of specific vectors, determining conditions for linear independence in sets, and finding bases for polynomial spaces. Additionally, it addresses the dimensions of certain subspaces and properties of vector spaces, including the implications of having more vectors than the dimension of the space.

Tutorial Sheet-4
Convener: Dr. Abhash Kumar Jha

1. Check the vectors f (x) = e2x sinx and g(x) = e2x cosx for linear independence over R.

2. For what values of a is the set {(1, 1, 1 + a), (2, 2 + a, 2 + a), (3 + a, 3 + a, 3 + a)} linearly independent?
3. Does the set S = {3, x2 − x + 3, 3x3 + x2 − x + 5, 3x3 + x2 + 6} form a basis for P3 (R)? Give another
basis for P3 (R). If the set S is a basis then what is the number of elements in each of the two bases ?
4. Show that if {v1 , v2 , · · · , vn } is a basis for a vector space V and 0 ̸= α ∈ F, then {αv1 , v2 , · · · , vn } is
also a basis for v.

5. Find the dimensions of the following subspaces of M2×3 (C) over C

(a) W1 = ad 0b 0c : a = b + c, c = b + d .

(b) W2 = ad eb 0c : a + c = d + e .
(c) W3 = ad eb fc : a + b = d + e, c = f .

6. Can R4 have a linearly independent subset of R4 containing 5 elements. Justify your answer.
7. Show that if dim V = n, then any n + 1 vectors in V are linearly dependent.
n x o
8. Let W = y : 2x + y + z = 0, x − y − z = 0 . Find dimension of W.
z

9. Let W be the subspace of R5 defined by W = {(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 , x5 ) ∈ R5 : x1 = 3x2 and x3 = 7x4 }.

Find a basis of W.
10. Suppose that U and W are both five-dimensional subspaces of R9 . Prove that U ∩ W ̸= {0}
