PHY301: ASSIGNMENT#1

Q 1:
Given Data:

 Voltage V = 12 V
 Resistor R1 = 10 Ω
 Resistor R2 = 3 Ω
 Resistor R3 = 6 Ω

Solution:

1/R23 = 1/R2 + 1/R3

1/R23 = 1/3 + 1/6 = 2 + 1/6 = 3/6 = 1/2

So,

R23 = 2 Ω

The total equivalent resistance Req is:

Req = R1 + R23 = 10+2 = 12 Ω

Using Ohm's law:

I = V/Req

Substitute the values:

I = 12/12 = 1A

Calculate the Power Across Each Resistor:

Power across R1R_1R1:

P1 = (I)2 × R1

P1 = (I)2 × 10 = 10W

Current through R2R_2R2 and R3R_3R3:

Since R2 and R3are in parallel

[V]23 = I × R23 = 1×2 = 2V

PHY301: ASSIGNMENT#1
Power across R2:

P2 = [V2]23 / R2 = (2)2 / 3 = 4/3 ≈ 1.33

Power across R3

P3 = [V2] 23/ R3 = (2)2 / 6 = 4/6 ≈ 0.67

Answers:

 Current III through the network: 1 A

 Power across each resistor:

P1 = 10W

P2 ≈ 1.33W

P3 ≈ 0.67W

Q 2:
Label Nodes:

Let V1 be the voltage at the node between the 10V source and the 5kΩ resistor.

Let V2 be the voltage at the node between the 5kΩ 10kΩ and 20kΩ resistors.

Let V3 be the voltage at the node between the 20kΩ resistor 3mA current source and the
10kΩ resistor.

1. Apply Nodal Analysis:

o At Node V1:

V1=10 V

o At Node V2: Using KCL at V2:

V2−V1 / 5 kΩ + V2 / 10 kΩ + V2−V3 / 20 kΩ = 0

Substitute V1=10V:

V2−10 / 5 + V2 / 10 + V2−V3 / 20 = 0

o At Node V3: Using KCL at V3:

PHY301: ASSIGNMENT#1
V3−V2 / 20 kΩ + V3 / 10 kΩ = 3 mA

o Solve these equations to find V2 and V3.

Calculate Current through 5kΩ Resistor:

I = V1−V2 / 5 kΩ

Q 3:
1. Total Resistance in Series:

R4total = 10Ω + 20Ω = 30Ω

2. Total Current:

I = Vsource / R4total = 10 V / 30Ω = 1/3 A

3. Voltage Drop across 10Ω Resistor:

V = I×10Ω = 1/3 × 10 = 10/3 ≈ 3.33 V
