Calculations on
Artesunate Injections
Prepared by : Dr. Waleed Al-Sibakhi
General dose:
Patients < 20 kg: 2.4 - 3 mg/kg/dose
Patients ≥ 20 kg: 2.4 mg/kg/dose
1st dose: hour 0 { then
2nd dose: hour 12 Every 24 hours, until:
3rd dose: hour 24
The patient is able to take an oral anti-malarial drug.
or
For max. 7 days of parenteral artesunate.
How to Calculate a Patient’s Dose ??
1) Patient’s age:
2) Patient’s weight:
3) Dose (mg):
➢ IV injection (10 mg/mL)
4) Dose (mL): ➢ IM injection (20 mg/mL)
Question 1
A 1.5-year-old child whose weight is 10 kg, suffers from severe malaria.
What is the suitable dose of IV Artesunate injection ??
1) Child’s age: 1.5 years
2) Child’s weight: 10 kg
3) Dose (mg): 3 mg/kg
3 mg*10 = 30 mg
4) Dose (mL):
10 mg/mL
1 𝒎𝑳
= 30 mg * = 3 mL.

Question 2
A 1.5-year-old child whose weight is 10 kg, suffers from severe malaria.
What is the suitable dose of IM Artesunate injection ??
1) Child’s age: 1.5 years
2) Child’s weight: 10 kg
3) Dose (mg): 3 mg/kg
3 mg*10 = 30 mg
4) Dose (mL):
20 mg/mL
1 𝒎𝑳
= 30 mg * = 1.5 mL

Question 3
A 32-year-old patient whose weight is 63 kg, suffers from severe malaria.
What is the suitable dose of IV Artesunate injection ??
1) Patient’s age: 32 years
2) Patient’s weight: 63 kg
3) Dose (mg): 2.4 mg/kg
2.4 mg*63 = 151.2 mg
4) Dose (mL):
1 𝒎𝑳 10 mg/mL
= 151.2 mg * = 15.12 mL

Question 4
A 69-year-old patient, weighing 57 kg, suffers from severe malaria (&
chronic kidney disease). What is the dose of IV Artesunate injection ??
1) Patient’s age: 69 years
2) Patient’s weight: 57 kg
3) Dose (mg): 2.4 mg/kg
2.4 mg*57 = 136.8 mg
4) Dose (mL): 10 mg/mL
1 𝒎𝑳
= 136.8 mg * = 13.68 mL

Question 5
A 44-year-old patient, weighing 91 kg, suffers from severe malaria.
What is the suitable dose of IM Artesunate injection ??
1) Patient’s age: 44 years
2) Patient’s weight: 91 kg
3) Dose (mg): 2.4 mg/kg
mg* = mg
4) Dose (mL):
