Lab 04 Series Circuits

The document outlines a lab exercise for the Basic Electricity for Engineering Programs course, focusing on series circuits. Students are tasked with calculating and measuring resistances, currents, and voltage drops in a designed series circuit using specified materials and procedures. The lab includes steps for constructing the circuit, taking measurements, and understanding key concepts related to voltage, current, and resistance in series circuits.

ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

BASIC ELECTRICITY FOR ENGINEERING PROGRAMS – ELEC279

LAB 4: SERIES CIRCUITS

OBJECTIVES
 Calculate and measure the resistances, currents and voltage drops in a series circuit.
 Design a simple series circuit to meet specified requirements.

 All of the components in a series circuit are connected “end to end” to form a single current path.
The applied voltage divided by the sum of the resistances equals the total current flow.
The current is the same for all series connected elements.

MATERIALS
 Resistor Panel A
 Fluke 179 Meter
 24VDC Power Supply
 Fused test lead
 Connecting wires as required

PROCEDURE
1. Consider the circuit shown in Figure 1.

A B R2 = 1k C

D

E = 24VDC 1k8

a. Measure the resistance of each resistor and enter their values in Table 1.

b. Connect a 24VDC Supply to a 120VAC source, apply power and measure the output
voltage “E”. Record the voltage below. If you are unsure of the correct connections,
ask an instructor for assistance.

a. E = __________

c. Calculate the following values and enter the calculated results in Table 2:

RT, IT, V1k, V1.8k, V3.3k

Note: Use measured resistance values in all of your calculations.

Show all your calculations in the space provided.
(space for calculations)

 In the following steps you will be taking multiple voltage and current readings. BEFORE
applying power to the circuit, ensure you have the correct meter connections.
Also check to see that the meter is set to the correct function for the
measurement you are about to take. If a meter set up to measure current, but is
connected in parallel like a voltmeter, it will blow an expensive fuse and could potentially
damage the very expensive meter. If in doubt, check with an instructor before applying
power to your circuit.

2. Construct the circuit and measure and record the values listed in Table 2. Remember to take
the total resistance measurement with NO power applied to the circuit.

3. In the following steps you will measure current at different points in the circuit. Remember to
turn off the power whenever you change or add connections to your circuit.

a. Turn off the power and remove the connecting wire between points C and D, then
replace it with an ammeter with a fused test lead. Reapply power and record the
meter reading.

IC-D = __________

b. Once again, turn off the power and remove the meter. Replace the connecting wire
between C and D. Now replace the connecting wire between points E and F with an
ammeter. Reapply power and record the meter reading.

IE-F = __________

c. Turn off the power and remove the current meter, but do not replace the jumper
between points E and F. Measure and record below:

Current “I”, V1k, V1.8k, VEF

IT = __________, V1 = __________, V2 = __________, VEF(open) = __________

5. Have your results checked by an instructor. Sign off #1

Student Name

Hand this sheet into an instructor once the lab is completed.

Sign Off #1: __________

1. Write out these three equations;

a. Describe how applied voltage relates to load voltages in a series circuit.

b. Describe how total current relates to the current in each load resistor.

c. Describe how total resistance relates to individual load resistors.

2. Using only a voltmeter when troubleshooting a series circuit, how would one find:

a) an open resistor?

b) shorted resistor?
